Carboxytherapy: the news against aging

Carboxytherapy is an anti-aging technique that involves injecting carbon dioxide under the skin in order to improve microcirculation and the appearance of the epidermis.

What is carboxytherapy?

Initially practiced in the 30s for the treatment of vascular pathologies of the legs, carboxytherapy has been using carbon dioxide for aesthetic purposes for about ten years. An original process that involves the subcutaneous injection of small amounts of medical CO2 using a very fine needle to improve circulation and promote cell regeneration.

The swelling will then subside naturally and the carbon dioxide will be evacuated by the body.

What are the effects of this anti-aging technique on the skin?

A non-invasive method of aesthetic medicine, these CO2 injections increase blood flow and therefore tissue oxygenation. The oxygen supply and stimulation of the area will boost the fibroblast, this cell in the dermis responsible for synthesizing collagen and elastin fibers and which over time tends to stiffen.

The aesthetic doctor will determine the areas where to perform the injections to rejuvenate the face, neck, décolleté or even the hands. After a few sessions, the skin renews itself and regains better firmness. Oxygenation of the skin also improves the hydration, texture and radiance of the dermis.

Carboxytherapy to improve the eye area

This aesthetic medicine technique is particularly recommended for reducing black, brown or blue circles. The injection of carbon dioxide at the level of the eye area, where the skin is particularly thin, will cause a slight swelling, allowing an improvement in circulation.

Dark circles and bags under the eyes usually appearing because of poor blood and / or lymphatic circulation, carboxytherapy will drain the area and thus improve the appearance of the eye area.

Stimulation of the vascularity which also acts on wrinkles around the eyes such as:

  • fine lines on the crow’s feet;
  • the valley of tears.

How is the session going?

Injections take place in the doctor’s or cosmetic surgeon’s office. The procedure does not require anesthesia and usually lasts no more than 30 minutes. The patient can then return home and resume normal activity. It is even possible to put on make-up immediately after the session.

Side effects of carboxytherapy

The skin will tend to redden in the hours following the injections, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the skin types. Small bruises – harmless – can also appear at the injection sites.

“Insofar as CO2 is a natural component in the functioning of the body, carboxytherapy does not present any risk of allergy”, affirms Doctor Cédric Kron, cosmetic surgeon in Paris and member of the National Academy of Surgery.

How many sessions of carboxytherapy do you need to see the first effects?

The results vary depending on the person, their skin problem and the area being treated. However, it is estimated that it takes between 4 and 6 sessions to see the first improvements. “We do two sessions the first week, then one session per week. It is advisable to renew the treatment once or twice a year to ensure long-term results ”, specifies the Clinique des Champs Elysées, specializing in surgery and aesthetic medicine in Paris.

How much does a session cost?

The price varies depending on the part processed. Count between 50 and 130 € for the treatment of an area. Some centers offer packages of several sessions in order to limit costs.
