Black mask: why use a charcoal mask?

A true beauty ally, charcoal is recognized for its purifying and cleansing properties. Effective against blackheads and other imperfections on the skin of the face, the charcoal mask requires some precautions to be taken to use it properly.

What are the benefits of charcoal on the skin?

It is mainly activated vegetable charcoal that is used in cosmetic products. It is obtained from wood heated to high temperature in an oxygen-free environment in order to increase its carbon concentration. This type of charcoal has an important absorption capacity.

It will act as a magnet and effectively remove excess sebum and impurities such as blackheads.

Available in a fabric mask, peel off or even cream version, to take advantage of the purifying effects of charcoal, certain cosmetic products also combine it with salicylic acid with antibacterial and regulating properties.

What type of skin should you use the black mask on?

The charcoal mask is intended especially for those who have combination or oily skin, prone to acne. It is also recommended for smokers or people living in a polluted environment to use it.

Like a sponge, the black face will purify and absorb the impurities linked to cigarette smoke or urban environments. For problem skin or skin subject to pollution, it is recommended to apply it once or twice a week at most, respecting the duration indicated on the product.

Dry and / or sensitive skin can also use it, but at a more moderate rate, once a week, so as not to attack and weaken the epidermis.

Watch out for black face masks, made from glue

Videos of black masks punctuated social networks for several weeks, until the FEBEA – Federation of Beauty Companies – sounded the alarm in April 2017 after several reports from users. Irritations, burns, allergies, some YouTubers even found themselves with the mask literally stuck on their face.

Non-compliant charcoal masks

FEBEA experts have obtained three cosmetic products made in China on an online sales platform in order to verify the conformity of the labels. “None of the products received comply with European regulations regarding labeling. In addition, inconsistencies were noted between the list of ingredients and the information on the shelf life of the product. Finally, none of these products, although purchased on a French site, are labeled in French, which is however compulsory ”, details the federation which alerted the authorities of control of cosmetic products.

Among the ingredients singled out, there are solvents that are toxic to the skin and in particular industrial liquid glue. The application of this type of black mask can have serious consequences on the health of the users.

How to choose the right charcoal mask?

According to cosmetics professionals, four criteria should be taken into consideration before choosing and using a product of this type:

  • check that the label on the packaging is written in French;
