Aortic aneurysm prophylactic examinations are starting in Kujawsko-Pomorskie

Six medical institutions will conduct tests in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region as part of the next edition of the preventive program, the purpose of which is to detect an abdominal aortic aneurysm early enough. Thanks to the funds of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń, approx. 2,2 thousand people.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a serious threat, especially for men over 60. An effective strategy to combat this disease is primarily its early detection, still in the asymptomatic stage, said Piotr Całbecki, the Marshal of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The Kuyavian-Pomeranian abdominal aortic aneurysm screening program is addressed to men aged 65 who smoke cigarettes. According to the data obtained by the Marshal’s Office in Toruń, the incidence of this disease in men of this age is approx. 4%.

Ultrasound screening is non-invasive and does not involve any complications for the patient’s health. Patients whose examination detects a segment of the dilated aorta (more than 3 cm in diameter) will be referred for further check-ups or to a vascular surgery specialist – emphasized Beata Krzemińska, spokeswoman for the Marshal of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

As part of the program, in 2012, 419 people took part in the research. In almost thirty cases, a dilated abdominal aorta with a diameter of more than 3 cm was detected. Educational interviews were conducted with over half of the patients, ten were referred for further diagnostics – added Krzemińska.

The coordinator of the project, just like last year, will be the University Hospital No. Dr. Antoni Jurasz in Bydgoszcz. The program is implemented by six medical institutions selected in a competition, which will receive patients from the entire region.
