Risk factors
These factors have been linked to lower testosterone levels9 :
- Excessive consumption of alcohol and marijuana;
- Extra weight. A 4 or 5 point increase in body mass index would be equivalent to an aging of 10 years relative to the drop in testosterone10;
- Abdominal obesity. It corresponds to a waist circumference greater than 94 cm (37 in) in men;
- Diabetes and metabolic syndrome;
- Blood lipid levels, especially cholesterol, outside normal values;
- Chronic illness;
- Liver problems;
- Chronic stress;
- Taking certain medications, such as antipsychotics, certain antiepileptics and narcotics.
