A month of sobriety: in Belgium, they gave up alcohol

Throughout February, Belgium is a month of sobriety. After all, along with medieval cities and Renaissance buildings, this country is also known for its long traditions of brewing.

Belgium produces about 900 different brands of beer, some of which are 400-500 years old. In the past, in Belgium, the number of breweries was on par with the number of churches.

And, of course, beer is not only produced here, but also drunk. The level of alcohol consumption in Belgium is the highest among the countries of Western Europe – it is 12,6 liters of alcohol per year per capita. Thus, 8 out of 10 residents of Belgium consume alcohol regularly, and 10% of the population exceeds the recommended norm.

Therefore, the month of sobriety is a necessary measure in the matter of improving the health of the nation and reducing the rates of premature mortality. Last year, about 18% of Belgians took part in such an action, while 77% of them said that they did not drink a drop of alcohol for the whole February, while 83% were satisfied with this experience.

We will remind, earlier we wrote about what is named the best alcoholic drink to keep warm.
