A hybrid of raspberries and strawberries: what it looks like, growing

Delicious, sweetish, juicy berry, which is popularly called a hybrid of raspberries and strawberries, looks unusual. Outwardly, it actually looks like both berries at the same time. However, there are no botanical miracles and it is not yet possible to cross a bush with a grass.

What does a raspberry-strawberry hybrid look like?

Raspberries are a shrub, strawberry, or wild strawberry, a herbaceous perennial. The raspberry berry is a fused drupe, while the strawberry is a whole berry on the stalk. Two different species are mistakenly called a hybrid of these plants: raspberries (Rubus illecebrosus) and rose-leaved raspberries (Rubus rosifolius).

There is no hybrid of raspberries and strawberries, this is the name of a separate species – raspberries

Bright scarlet juicy raspberry is a special type of raspberry that tastes like a garden berry. It is juicy, like raspberries, it is a multifarious one, but it is inferior to traditional culture in taste and sweetness. But outwardly, the raspberry is much more spectacular:

  • the bush is low, lush, up to 1,5 m in height;
  • leaves are juicy green, textured, reminiscent of corrugated paper;
  • small but very tenacious thorns on the stems;
  • the berries are large, bright scarlet, up to 4 cm in diameter, and shine in the sun from the abundance of juice.

It is not surprising that in some countries, for example in the Baltic States, raspberries are grown as an ornamental plant. Although the berries are also quite tasty: juicy, with a pleasant sourness.

Raspberry rose-leaved, or Tibetan raspberry, is similar to raspberry, like a cousin. She has smooth leaves and small, no more than 1,5 cm, berries. The bush does not grow higher than 60 cm.

Growing a hybrid of raspberries and strawberries

To grow raspberries, choose a loose, fertile area. The plant feels comfortable on the sunny side and in partial shade. You can plant raspberries on the site both as a beautiful hedge and as a fruit shrub. The best time to do this is from late September to mid-October. Before the onset of cold weather, the root system will get stronger, the bush will not hurt.

Landing rules.

  1. Dig the planting holes ½ m deep. Add ½ bucket of humus and a bucket of peat to each.
  2. The distance between the seedlings should be at least 1 m.If you are planting in 2 rows, leave a trench of 1,5 m between them.
  3. Root the seedling, trample the soil and water it immediately.
  4. Mulch the soil under the crown with compost, peat chips, humus.
  5. As soon as the first frosts hit, spud the plant, add a bucket of earth with humus under each trunk.

Over the summer, each bush of hybrid raspberry-strawberry will give many shoots. To grow a new bush, it is enough to carefully dig out the process, keeping the earthen butt on the root, and plant it in the desired area.

The delicious fruit crop – a hybrid of raspberries and strawberries – is actually a separate botanical species. The berries taste more like raspberries. The appearance of the shrub is decorative, so it is often used to create hedges.
