From the first equestrian cabarets to “Calacas”, Zingaro’s shows combine equestrian theater, dance, world music, poetry and many other artistic disciplines. The 25-year-old company has grown into one of the largest in Europe. Her shows triumph across the world, from the Fort d’Aubervilliers where she is based, to Istanbul, Hong Kong, Moscow, New York, or Tokyo.

Bartabas, pioneer of this original expression, mixed between equestrian art, music, dance and comedy, invented and staged with tact, ardor and intuition, a new form of live performance: equestrian theater. With his company, founded in 1984 under the name of the Zingaro Equestrian Theater, he moved to Fort d’Aubervilliers in 1989, in a wooden marquee designed to his measure by Patrick Bouchain.

In 2003, he founded the Académie du spectacle équestre de Versailles, a corps de ballet which performed in the riding hall of the Grande Écurie Royale., and for which he signed the staging of the “Chevalier de Saint-Georges”, the “Voyage aux Indes Galantes” and the “Mares de la nuit”, productions given in the grandiose framework of the “Fêtes de Nuits” of the castle of Versailles.

Christmas circus show: “Calacas”

“Calacas”, Bartabas’ latest creation for the Zingaro equestrian theater, is back at Fort d’Aubervilliers from November 2, the day of the Feast of the Dead, for an exceptional 2nd season.

“Calacas”, or “skeleton” in Mexican, is inspired by the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. A true dance of the joyfully macabre soul, performed on the floor and in the air, the artists performing the Calacas evolve like in a frenzied double carnival to the sound of the drums of “chinchineros”, Mexican brass bands, and barrel organs. The full troop offers the public a large colorful fresco carried out at a hellish pace by its riders, musicians and technicians who train 29 dazzling horses in their celestial dance. Horses which, over the paintings presented, like smugglers, couriers, messengers or guardian angels lead the souls of the dead into the afterlife …
