The first World Fisheries Day was celebrated in 1985. It is noteworthy that five years earlier in Our Country they began to celebrate a similar holiday – Fisherman’s Day. Its date is floating, it is the second Sunday of July.

Holiday traditions

All those involved will traditionally celebrate Fishing Day 2023 in Our Country with field trips to lakes, seas and rivers. They will compete in skill: who will catch the most, who will hook the longest and heaviest fish. The winners will receive themed gifts. It can be brand new fishing rods and equipment for your favorite hobby, as well as thermoses or, for example, a folding chair and a cast-iron soup bowl. Fishermen have their own joys.

Festive feasts are held on the banks of the reservoirs. Together with the heroes of the occasion, their friends and relatives walk. Of course, they cook fish soup in a pot. Toasts are sounded with the wishes of a good bite. And then the stories about the biggest catches begin.

Every year at these holidays you can see more and more women with fishing rods in their hands. 35% of women have fished at least once in their lives. However, in men this figure is twice as high. These are the data of the Levada Center research organization.

Do not forget that this is a holiday not only for fishing enthusiasts, but also for professionals who work in this field. Therefore, on the Day of Fisheries, seminars are held where specialists make presentations on topical problems in their industry. One of them is poaching. For many years, responsible fishermen and environmentalists have been fighting against it, including at the legislative level.

New law “On recreational fishing”

On January 1, 2020, the law “On recreational fishing” came into force. To the delight of all rod owners, he canceled fishing fees on public waters. But there are a number of restrictions. For example, it is now strictly forbidden to use gillnets, chemicals and explosives.

Each region has set its own rules on the size of the fish that can be caught so that the fry are not killed. It became important at the level of the law and the weight of the catch. A fisherman has the right to catch a day no more than 10 kg of crucian carp, roach and perch, as well as no more than 5 kg of pike, burbot, bream and carp. Grayling is allowed to get no more than 3 kg in one hand.

Interesting facts about fishing

  • Archaeologists have unearthed fishing rods that are over 30 years old. Their hooks are made from natural materials – stones, animal bones or plants with thorns. Instead of fishing line – vines of plants or tendons of animals.
  • The most gigantic fish ever caught by a man on a bait is a man-eating white shark. Its weight was more than 1200 kg, and its length was more than 5 meters. Caught in South Australia in 1959. To pull the shark to land, the fisherman needed the help of several people.
  • To fish in the Amazon, you need to have a herd of cows. The fact is that there lives an electric eel. It is protected from uninvited guests and beats with a voltage of 500 volts. Such a discharge can not only kill a frog, but also harm a person. Therefore, fishermen send animals into the water ahead of themselves, and eels spend their charge on them. The cows remain intact, the eels are disarmed, and the fishermen can enter the river.
  • In some states of Central Africa, they go fishing not with a fishing rod, but with a shovel. Local protopter fish burrow deep into the silt during a drought. There she can live for a long time even after the reservoir dries up. The fishermen dig it out, and then … bury it again. But only close to her home so she can stay alive and fresh until needed.
  • Another interesting type of fishing is noodling. You don’t even need a shovel. Only sleight of hand! A person enters the water and looks for where a large fish can hide. For example, some kind of hole. Then the fisherman probes this place and, as soon as the disturbed fish moves, he grabs it with his bare hands. So they catch, for example, catfish. By the way, he has sharp teeth. Therefore, such an occupation is quite dangerous.
