Winney American (Wynnea americana) – a fungus from the genus of marsupial fungi Winney (family Sarkoscifaceae), order Petsitseva.

The first mention of Winney can be found in the English naturalist Miles Joseph Berkeley (1866). Winney americana was first mentioned by Roland Thaxter back in 1905, when this species was found in Tennessee.

A distinctive feature of this fungus (and the whole species) is the fruiting body that grows on the surface of the soil and resembles a hare’s ear in shape. You can meet this mushroom almost everywhere, from the USA to China.

The fruit body of the fungus, the so-called apothecia, is rather thick, the flesh is dense and very hard, but when dried, it quickly becomes leathery and soft. The color of the fungus is dark brown, on the surface there are many small pimples. Mushrooms of this species grow directly, are located on the soil itself, resemble, as mentioned earlier, a hare’s ear in shape. Winney American grows in groups of different sizes: there are small “companies” of mushrooms, and extensive networks growing from a common stem, which is formed from an underground mycelium. The leg itself is hard and dark, but with light flesh inside.

A little about the disputes of Winney American. Spore powder has a light color. Spores are slightly asymmetrical, fusiform, about 38,5 x 15,5 microns in size, decorated with patterns of longitudinal ribs and small spines, many droplets. Spore bags are usually cylindrical, rather long, 300 x 16 µm, each with eight spores.

Winney American can be found almost all over the world, because. It lives in deciduous forests. In the United States, this mushroom grows in many states. It can also be found in China and India. In Our Country, this type of Vinney is very rare and is found only in the famous Kedrovaya Pad Reserve.
