Omicron in Europe

In the coming months, the Omikron variant could become the source of more than half of all SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections in Europe. This information was provided on Tuesday by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), using mathematical models developed by ECDC specialists. French scientific adviser Jean-Francois Delfraissy estimates that Omicron could replace the Delta variant as a dominant strain by the end of January.

There are still no clear messages about the contagiousness of the Omikron variant. WHO’s chief epidemic expert, Maria Van Kerkhove, said Wednesday that concrete data on the subject should be available within a few days.

What is known about the course of infection with the Omikron variant?

The Omikron variant was first detected in southern Africa last month. So far, around 80 cases of infection with this strain have been confirmed in Europe. Nearly half of these patients underwent asymptomatic disease, while the remaining patients developed only mild symptoms. No patient was diagnosed with severe COVID-19. There were also no cases requiring hospitalization or deaths.

Most of the patients for whom data on age and vaccination status have been collected are young and have been fully vaccinated. ECDC did not provide more information, but it was noted that those infected included travelers whose overall health may have been better than that of the general population.
