When to plant cabbage seedlings in 2022 according to the lunar calendar
There is no point in growing white cabbage through seedlings – seedlings are not afraid of spring frosts, so they are sown immediately in open ground. And when it is better to do this in 2022 according to the lunar calendar, read in our material

When and how to sow cabbage

The best time for sowing cabbage is the end of April (1).

The ideal place on the site is where cucumbers, garlic, onions, potatoes, carrots or legumes grew last year. But after radishes, radishes, turnips or arugula, you can’t place it!

Cabbage seeds are sown in holes with a diameter of 0,5 m. Before sowing, 1 bucket of humus or compost is added to each hole. Then water well. When the water is absorbed, they start sowing – 3 seeds are sown in each hole at a distance of 10 cm from each other to a depth of 2 – 3 cm (2). Top with dry soil. And then – a layer of ash (it will protect seedlings from diseases).

Favorable days for sowing cabbage seeds according to the lunar calendar: 13 – 15, 21 – 22 April.

Tips for caring for cabbage crops

After sowing the seeds, it is advisable to cover the holes with a non-woven fabric – it will protect the soil from drying out and protect the seedlings from the cruciferous flea. When the cabbage sprouts, the non-woven fabric must be lifted and placed on arcs, so that the plants have room to develop.

When the seedlings have the first true leaves, from the three shoots you need to choose the strongest, and pull out the rest. It is impossible to leave all three plants – they will be cramped and heads of cabbage will not tie.

Cabbage is a moisture-loving crop, adult plants consume more than 10 liters of water per day (3), so it needs to be watered often and plentifully, preferably directly into the holes. Water consumption rate: 3 – 5 liters per 1 sq. m in cool weather and 6 – 10 in hot weather. And in the heat for cabbage, a refreshing shower on the leaves is useful at the rate of 0,2 – 0,5 liters per 1 sq. m beds.

Cabbage should be watered every 10 to 12 days.

How to protect cabbage from pests

Not all summer residents manage to grow a good crop of cabbage – pests love it very much. They seem to be few, but they are very voracious – in just a few days they can make holes in leaves and heads of cabbage. Therefore, it is important to deal with them in time.

You can, of course, use modern drugs, but what about those who do not accept chemistry in the garden? There are remedies for them too.

From cruciferous fleas

Non-woven material. You can prevent the invasion of these small pests if you cover the cabbage beds with non-woven material – the same one that usually covers tomatoes, peppers and eggplants from frost in the spring. All that is needed is to put arcs over the beds and pull a non-woven fabric over them. But it is important that the edges of the material are firmly pressed to the ground. And even better, sprinkle them with soil so that the pests definitely do not crawl inside.

Glue traps. They are pretty efficient too. It is enough to smear small sheets of plywood with any slow-drying glue and lay them out on cabbage beds. And then approach the cabbage more often – at the sight of danger, the fleas begin to jump, and most of them will stick to the traps.

Vinegar. Another way is to spray the cabbage with vinegar: dilute 10 liters of 0,5% vinegar or 9-1 tbsp in 2 liters of water. spoons of 70% essence. The resulting solution should be sprayed on the plants so that it gets on the leaves not only from above, but also from below. Processing should be carried out in dry weather.

A decoction of tomato leaves. It is prepared like this: 4 kg of chopped fresh stepchildren are soaked for 4 hours in 10 liters of water. Then boil on low heat for 2-3 hours. The broth must be cooled, filtered, diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 1 and add 40 g of liquid soap – it will help the solution stick to the leaves better.

From caterpillars

Cabbage leaves are happy to eat two types of caterpillars – cabbage whites and cabbage scoops. And one remedy will help them.

Burdock infusion. Grind the burdock leaves and fill the bucket with them by about a third. Pour in water and let it brew for 3 days. Strain. With this infusion, the plants need to be sprayed 3-4 times with an interval of 7 days.

Popular questions and answers

We talked about growing cabbage with agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mikhailova – asked her the most popular questions of summer residents.

Is it possible to grow cabbage through seedlings?

It is possible, but early varieties are usually sown for seedlings in order to get a crop a couple of weeks faster. But such varieties are not stored. Mid-season and late varieties are best sown directly on the beds – this will save both time and space on the windowsill. They will have time to give a harvest in time.

How far apart should cabbage be planted?

To get large heads, the distance between plants should be as follows:

– in a row – 60 cm;

– between rows – 70 cm.

Do I need to cover cabbage shoots from frost?

Shoots of white cabbage withstand frosts down to -5 ° C, and at the end of April – May, the temperature usually does not drop below. So they can’t be hidden. But if the forecast promises a stronger cooling, then the crops should be covered with a non-woven fabric.
