What is hemoglobin and what is its function in the human body? How should hemoglobin results be interpreted? What can low hemoglobin mean? What can cause low hemoglobin levels? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What does low hemoglobin testify to?

Hello. I have a question – what does it mean low hemoglobin? Is the same as low levels of red blood cells in blood? My blood tests showed low hemoglobin recently. I tried to read a bit on the internet about it because I was wondering if this result could mean any disease, but I couldn’t come across any clear information about what low hemoglobin means.

I would like to point out that I am not sick, or at least I do not know anything about any disease. I do not have any chronic diseases, I have never suffered from any particular ailments, so this result surprised me. Could low hemoglobin be some kind of laboratory error? The other results are generally correct, nothing is significantly different from the norm, and I wonder if I should try to repeat the test and check if I get low hemoglobin again or maybe this time everything will be fine.

Is there any factor that could influence this result? And if not, I’d like to know exactly what it means. Thank you in advance for your answer.

The doctor explains what are the causes of low hemoglobin?

Sir, you should write exactly what it is hemoglobin concentration. The term low hemoglobin is very general and does not add any relevant information. The low concentration is considered to be 10 g / dl but also 6 g / dl, and believe me the difference is significant. You wrote that the rest of the results are generally correct, however I do not know what results do you mean and what is meant by “generally correct”.

Unfortunately, the information provided by you is very general and does not contribute to recognition. Low hemoglobin level very often it results from iron deficiency and thus microcytic anemia. A small amount of iron disrupts the production of hemoglobin. In turn, its incorrect amount makes red blood cells smaller and paler than normal.

In that case, outside reduced amount of hemoglobin in the blood count there is also a decrease in the number of red blood cells and, as I mentioned, a decrease in the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood cell. Symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include weakness and easy fatigue, dizziness, disturbances in uadi and concentration, shortness of breath, palpitations, and pale skin and mucous membranes.

As for the causes of niron deficiency there are many of them. The main ones include iron deficiency in food, abnormal absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, blood loss resulting from traumatic bleeding and from internal organs, including the digestive system, genital tract and urinary tract.

Sometimes it happens that hemoglobin decreases due to overhydration of the body, excess water in the blood vessels causes a decrease in hemoglobin. In your case, I suggest you repeat the test and additionally check the concentration of ferritin and transferrin, and then go to your family doctor.
