What are the symptoms ? When should you consult?

Long considered benign, the disease attracted attention above all from the 2006 epidemic in Réunion, with the appearance of serious forms.

Classically, CHIKV infection manifests itself between 1 and 12 days after the bite by the infected mosquito, most often between the 4th and the 7th day, with:

– the sudden onset of a high fever (over 38.5 ° C),

– headaches,

– significant muscle and joint pain mainly concerning the extremities (wrists, ankles, fingers), and less often concerning the knees, shoulders, or hips.

– a rash on the trunk and limbs with red spots or slightly raised pimples.

– bleeding from the gums or nose may also be observed.

– swelling of certain lymph nodes,

– conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eyes)

The infection can also go completely unnoticed, but more rarely than in the case of zika.

It is important to see a doctor if there are:

– A sudden fever, whether or not associated with headaches, muscle and joint pain, a skin rash, people living in an epidemic area or having returned for less than twelve days should consult.

– The notion of travel or stay in an epidemic region if they are associated with fatigue or persistent pain.

During the consultation, the doctor looks for the symptoms of chikungunya, and also other diseases, in particular those which can be transmitted by the same mosquitoes like dengue or zika.
