La PIF (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) is a viral disease fatal in cats.

This virus is very contagious and can survive in the outdoor environment for six weeks, but is quickly destroyed with disinfectants.

It is frequently encountered in shelters or farms.

The cat can harbor the virus for several years without reporting any symptoms. It is usually during stress that the disease will appear.

It results in a high, relapsing fever. Then, the PIF can have two forms:

• La “wet” form : an effusion in the abdomen or thorax.
• La “dry” form which can reach every organ and cause them to fail.

No vaccine or treatment currently exists.
