The expert saw the first-aid kits of soldiers. «It should go to the museum, not to the battlefield»

The world is rubbing its eyes with amazement as it follows reports of how unprepared the army is for the invasion of Ukraine. The soldiers of the world’s second army are practically deprived of medical care. The oldest first aid kits they use are over 45 years old. There are also no field hospitals and frontline doctors.

  1. The numerous photos leaked into the network show that first aid kits and medical kits used by the army do not meet the requirements of the modern battlefield
  2. The oldest of them were produced in the 70s and are older than most of the conflict participants
  3. In an interview with Medonet, an emergency medicine doctor assessed the condition of the first-aid kits of the military. «Their equipment is generally in line with the condition of the army. Packages look historical rather than functional » states

Recently, Jerzy Owsiak shared on social media that the military first aid kits provided by his foundation helped save the lives of three soldiers in the Ukrainian unit defending Kharkiv.

This is another proof of how important it is to use the achievements of medicine, not only civil but also military.

A lot of photos of medical packages that soldiers were equipped with during the invasion of Ukraine are circulating on the Internet. Some are even shocking.

“Antique” first aid kits of the s

Our Country’s invasion of Ukraine is not going as planned by the Kremlin. Many soldiers not only have low morale, they are also simply unprepared for combat. The military often lacks basic equipment. It is not only about food rations that are overdue by years or shortages in fuel, but also about personal protective equipment, i.e. first aid kits, the equipment of which can be described as archaic.

What do the first aid kits of and Ukrainian soldiers look like? One of such comparisons was published on the Internet by Christo Grozew, an analyst at bellingcat.com.

As the analyst points out, the photo was taken by mercenaries who out of anger compared the equipment of first-aid kits of both fighting sides s (above) and Ukrainians (below). If you believe in the authenticity of the photo, the invasive troops in the first aid kit have archaic bandages and compression belts at their disposal. Defenders have much more first aid.

The photos show an individual medical package. I ignore the poor sanitary condition, which is visible to the naked eye. The package does not include modern hemostatic dressings, only probably gauze and bandage dressings. There is no tactical tourney, only a, let’s call it classic tourney. The package looks historic assesses in an interview with Medonet, MD. Sławomir Wilga, specialist in emergency medicine.

The photos published by Grozew are not an isolated incident. Itv.com reported a similar find from a battlefield near Mikołajew. After the armed fighting there, the s had to withdraw, leaving most of the military equipment behind. On the battlefield were abandoned, incl. first aid kits with military medical dressings, the usefulness of which ended in 1978. In other words, they were older than many of the participants in the ongoing conflict.

As the medic emphasizes, it must not be forgotten that even a technologically old package is better than nothing. With a choice of modern technology, such as hemostatic dressings, we will not reach for gauze. It can be assumed that the equipment of first aid kits is generally in line with the condition of the army Wilga points out.

First aid kit “live fast, die young”

Ukrainian military medic Masha Nazarova published her own photo of the medical package on social media. According to the woman, the set includes, among others three small gauze bandages and a mini elastic bandage. The packaging shows the production date 1992 r.

«The set is extremely versatile. It is designed to provide care according to the “Live fast, die young” standard. The first aid kit itself is also a convenient means of transporting the owner’s remains » Ukrainian medical doctor writes in social media.

“First aid kits made according to Soviet standards”

The lack of medicaments and first aid kits not suitable for the modern battlefield are not the only problems of the army related to first aid. According to Roman Cymbaliuk, a journalist from the Ukrainian news agency Unian, soldiers of the armed forces stick to the opinion that “if a soldier in Ukraine is wounded, he will most likely die”.

“This is because the soldiers have not undergone any medical training and are unable to provide themselves or a companion with first aid. Military first aid kits are made according to Soviet standards, most often from out-of-date ingredients. As a result, most of the injured die early, before reaching the hospital » the journalist reports on social media.

As Cymbaliuk adds, the problem is also the lack of frontline doctors. Most of them lack the necessary skills and experience in the field of military medicine. That is why even students of the last years of medicine are sent to the front.

The first aid kit of a modern battlefield

The pictures presented so far are in complete contradiction to what the Ukrainian army currently has at its disposal. Thanks to Western aid, those who defend themselves against the invasion of Our Country have modern equipment at their disposal. Our eastern neighbor’s army received, incl. a thousand modern military first aid kits. Their delivery was announced on the Internet by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Fedorow Mykhailo.

As a standard, such a first aid kit includes, among others: tactical bandage, haemostatic dressing, filling gauze, occlusive or valve dressing, nasopharyngeal tube and rescue scissors, painkillers.
