How to choose a polycarbonate greenhouse

A greenhouse is not a cheap pleasure, it should last for many years, so the choice must be approached very carefully. There are several important points to pay attention to.

Frame. This is the basis of the greenhouse, so it must be durable and reliable. After all, several types of load act on it at once:

  • wind;
  • mass of tied plants;
  • mass of snow in winter.

The strength of the frame depends on 2 parameters:

  • pipe sections and wall thicknesses – the larger they are, the stronger the frame;
  • step between the arcs – the closer they are to each other, the stronger the greenhouse.

The standard sections of pipes that I use to make the frame of the greenhouse are 40×20 mm and 20×20 mm. The first option is 2 times stronger, and costs only 10 – 20% more.

The standard arc pitch is 0,67 m, 1,00 m (this is for country greenhouses) and 2,00 m (for industrial greenhouses). In the latter case, the frame is usually more powerful. And of the first 2 options, greenhouses are stronger in steps of 0,67 m. But they are more expensive.

No less important is the coating of the frame – pipes can be galvanized or painted. Galvanized are more durable. The paint peels off sooner or later and the frame begins to rust.

Polycarbonate. The standard thickness of polycarbonate for greenhouses is 4 mm. But sometimes 3 mm is cheaper, but less reliable. It’s better not to save here. Thicker polycarbonate is even better.

Form. Most often there are 3 types of greenhouses:

  • arched – the most practical form, it has an optimal ratio of strength and price;
  • drop-shaped – snow does not linger on it;
  • house (with flat walls) – an option for adherents of the classics.

Reviews of gardeners about polycarbonate greenhouses

Polycarbonate greenhouses are very popular, but at the same time, reviews about them are often contradictory. Here is a typical review, which has absorbed the essence of disputes in the country forums.

“Without a doubt, the best option is a glass greenhouse. Glass transmits light better and in terms of aesthetics, such greenhouses are at the highest level. But the labor costs for construction and repair, of course, are very high. Polycarbonate is the best option in terms of price / quality ratio. It’s quite suitable for growing cucumbers and tomatoes, but you can’t put such a greenhouse in the main place. ”

Popular questions and answers

We talked about the choice of greenhouses with agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mikhailova.

Can all polycarbonate greenhouses be installed in the Moscow region?

In the Moscow region, in principle, you can put any greenhouse, but it is better to choose with a more durable frame, because there are very snowy winters in this region. Pay attention to such a parameter as “snow load”. The higher this number, the better.

What is the optimal density of polycarbonate for a greenhouse?

In addition to the thickness of polycarbonate, its density is also important. The optimal density of polycarbonate 4 mm thick is 0,4 kg / sq. m. And if, for example, you come across 2 sheets of different thicknesses, but with the same density, take the one that is thinner – oddly enough, it is stronger.

When is it more profitable to buy a polycarbonate greenhouse?

The most optimal time to purchase a greenhouse is autumn. In September, prices are usually reduced by 30%. But in the spring it is unprofitable to take it – demand is high, so prices are rising. And besides, it takes a very long time to wait for delivery and installation.

An autumn purchase is also beneficial because in early spring you can sow early crops into it.
