The symptoms of bird flu depend on the virus involved. The incubation time may vary, the severity of symptoms and the type of symptoms depend on the virus contracted.

The person who contracts bird flu has almost always had close contact with infected poultry.

The signs observed can for example be:

– Fever,

– Aches, muscle pain,

– Cough,

– Headache,

– Breathing difficulties,

– Benign conjunctivitis (red, watery, itchy eye)

– Severe lung disease (lung damage),

– Diarrhea,

– Vomiting,

– Abdominal pain,

– nosebleeds,

– Bleeding gums,

– Pain in the chest.

When avian flu is severe, it can get complicated and can lead to:

– Hypoxia (lack of oxygen),

– Secondary bacterial infections (tissues irritated by the avian flu virus can be infected more easily by bacteria)

– Secondary fungal infections (tissues irritated by the avian flu virus can be infected more easily by a yeast sometimes called a fungus)

– Visceral failures (respiratory failure, heart failure, etc.)

– And unfortunately sometimes deaths.
