Measures to prevent seizures

The Association for the Information and Prevention of Sickle Cell Disease (Specialized Sites) makes the following recommendations to reduce the number of seizures:

1. Prevent infections: impeccable bodily and dental hygiene, antibiotic therapy and systematic vaccination from birth.

2. Pay attention to its temperature.

3. If the temperature is 38 ° C, you should quickly see a doctor.

4. Avoid dehydration, as this can start seizures and increase the viscosity of the blood. It is therefore necessary to drink a lot of water: about three liters per day. This precaution is all the more important in summer as well as in case of diarrhea, fever or vomiting. In summer, we will also take care to reduce exposure to the sun.

5. Make sure you never run out of oxygen. In other words, we must avoid:

– travel in non-pressurized or poorly pressurized airplanes;

– poorly ventilated areas;

– too intense physical effort;

– cooling;

– prolonged standing.

6. Very well eat. Dietary deficiencies worsen anemia and increase vulnerability to infections. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the diet provides an increased intake of folate, iron and protein.

7. Check for signs of rapid destruction of red blood cells: yellow eyes and skin (jaundice), dark urine, cold sores (cold sores or cold sores).

8. Be careful not to interfere with the circulation of the blood, as this can, among other things, swell the extremities or cause pain. It is therefore better to avoid wearing tight clothes, crossing your legs, etc.

9. It is also important to see a doctor regularly – especially to detect eye abnormalities early enough and prevent blindness.

10. Have a healthy lifestyle. In addition to eating well, it is also important to rest well and avoid unnecessary stress.
