Prevention of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Measures to prevent symptoms from worsening

Men with benign prostatic hyperplasia can still try to prevent it from getting worse by:

  • Take the time to empty his bladder as much as possible with each urination. Some men find it easier to do this while sitting than standing;
  • Go to urinate without waiting too long when an urgent urge is felt, so as not to distend the bladder too much. It is normal for urgent cravings to be more frequent during cold seasons;
  • Plan times during the day to go urinate: every 4 hours, for example. This can help reduce the number of urgent desires, when these are frequent;
  • Continue to hydrate well, but reduce your water and drink intake 1 or 2 hours before a long car trip, before going to bed and before a situation where you anticipate stress;
  • Reduce your alcohol and coffee consumption. Alcohol increases the volume of urine and reduces the feeling of having to urinate. For its part, coffee would cause a slight swelling of the prostate, which can accentuate the engorgement of the urinary tract;
  • Stay active : physical activity reduces the retention of urine in the bladder;
  • Taking pharmaceuticals diuretics, decongestants, or antihistamines (to treat allergies) may increase symptoms. People who consume it should talk to their doctor (however, it is not recommended to stop taking medication without medical advice).
