Prevention of ankylosing spondylitis (spondylitis) / rheumatism

Can we prevent?

Since we do not know its cause, there is no way to prevent ankylosing spondylitis. However, by some modifications of the way of life, it is possible to prevent the exacerbation of pain and decrease the stiffness. See also our Arthritis sheet (overview).

Basic preventive measures

In times of pain:

It is advisable not to stress the painful joints. Rest, adopting certain postures, and massage can relieve pain.

Outside of crisis periods:

Certain rules of hygiene of life can help to preserve as much as possible the flexibility of the joints. The pains that characterize ankylosing spondylitis tend to subside after the joints “warm up”. THE’physical exercise regular is therefore strongly recommended.

It is also recommended to move and stretch your joints several times a day: stretching the legs and arms, curling the spine, breathing exercises … The “cat” posture, which consists of alternating round back and hollow back to four legs, allows for example to soften the back. Ask your doctor or physiotherapist for advice.

Some tips to limit pain5 :

  • Sleep on a firm mattress with a flat pillow (or even without a pillow);
  • Sleep on your back or on your stomach, alternately, and avoid sleeping on your side;
  • Engage in a gentle sporting activity, such as swimming;
  • Avoid sitting or standing too long without moving the joints;
  • Do not carry heavy loads and learn to protect your back by bending your knees to lift objects;
  • Maintain a healthy weight, because excess weight increases joint pain;
  • Stop smoking. Smoking increases the cardiovascular risk, which is already increased in people with ankylosing spondylitis;
  • Relax or engage in a relaxation activity as stress can exacerbate symptoms.
