Pregnant, when to see a dietitian?

A nutritionist during pregnancy

We gain too much weight

The stronger we are before, the less weight we have to gain, because the baby draws on the reserves already formed. If we put on too much weight, the dietician will simply advise us to reduce our daily calorie intake. If we were thin at the start, the change in metabolism linked to pregnancy and / or the decrease in activity makes us store everything we swallow. Beware of sweet sodas, pastry cravings or gastronomic weekends! Another source of problem, the poor distribution of contributions over the day: we skip breakfast and make up for it in the evening. A bad calculation… The solution: a balanced diet by associating the families of foods. The right formula: protein (animal or vegetable) + starch + fruits and vegetables + dairy product. If you are hungry, you double the portion of vegetables or fruit. Sugar, which makes you completely addicted, should be banned, but be careful, all weight loss diets are contraindicated.

We don’t gain enough weight

If you are one of those very petite women who have only one anxiety, putting on too many pounds during their pregnancy. A bad attitude for the baby because he risks being too small at birth and therefore more fragile. The solution: change your eating habits. For this, it is necessary to increase the rations during the meals and to take two snacks during the day, based on dried fruits, cereal bars and other products rich in carbohydrates. Objective: to absorb more calories and sugars during the day.

We have too many sugars in our analyzes

Every month, we check our sugar level in the urine to detect possible gestational diabetes, due to an abnormality in the blood sugar regulating system. Too much sugar causes an abnormal secretion of insulin in the fetus, which grows and grows too much. It is therefore necessary to better distribute the glucose intake of cereal products and that of fruit. For this, we split the meals: the fruit is eaten two or three hours after the meal with a milk (which slows down the absorption of sugar). Snacks provide the body with the glucose it needs and often help regulate blood sugar. If the sugar level does not go down, for example the proportion of starchy foods is reduced and certain fruits are avoided.

We don’t like milk or dairy products

No worries ! The calcium requirement of a pregnant woman is 1500 mg per day because the baby needs it to build its skeleton. He draws on his mother’s reserves, which can lead to deficiencies and expose him to osteoporosis. If you don’t like dairy products (or if you are vegan) during pregnancy, other foods are very rich in calcium: watercress, white beans, spinach, endives and oranges, as well as certain waters. minerals (Vittel and Contrex).

Reflux prevents us from sleeping

Gastric reflux occurs after meals, and especially at night. Burns in the esophagus are sometimes associated with acid regurgitation. A dietician will advise us to split meals, ofavoid dishes in sauce, too fatty or too spicy and certain foods that ferment: cauliflower, cabbage, beans, pulses, asparagus, soups and raw vegetables.

How to choose your dietitian?

Above all, a good dietitian is one with whom you feel good. Indeed, they are all state graduates, so we will not judge him on his theoretical skills, but on his personality.

Be aware, however, that a good dietitian is one who does not deprive you of anything!
