Pear Williams – description of the pear variety

Pear “Williams” is a shining example of English quality and goodness. The variety, bred by Richard Williams, is distinguished by its classic and delicate taste, as well as excellent varietal characteristics.

General description of Williams pear

The trees of the variety are distinguished by their average height. Depending on the type, their height can reach from 2 to 5 m. The crown is asymmetric and has a pyramidal shape. The branches are strong, arched, which allows them to easily support the weight of the crop. The crown has dense, bright green foliage.

Pear “Williams” tolerates both frost and drought equally well

The disadvantages of the variety include insufficient keeping quality of fruits. When harvesting in the period of technical maturity, it can be stored for no more than a month. If the fruits are removed from the trees, without waiting for full ripeness, then under favorable storage conditions you can enjoy the fruit for 2 months

The fruits grow large in size, in the process of growth they have a green color, which, as it ripens, changes to yellow. The weight of one fruit is within 150-200 g. The pulp of the pear is juicy, white, sometimes it can be yellowish.

Varieties of pears “Williams”

Almost all varieties of the variety are self-fertile and require pollinators. The most famous subspecies are the following varieties:

  • The Williams Summer variety is one of the most popular late-ripening varieties. A distinctive feature is that the color on the tree begins to tie even before the first leaves appear. Inflorescences are highly resistant to recurrent frost. Therefore, they are not able to influence the formation of future fetuses. An adult tree grows up to 3 m. Fruits are large up to 200 g, especially in the first years of growth. After reaching 10 years of age, the yield of the variety is significantly reduced.
  • Variety “Williams Winter” refers to tall, large-fruited varieties. The mass of one fruit can reach 250 g. At the time of harvest, the peel of a pear has a light green hue; in the process of ripening in storage it acquires a pale lemon color. The pulp is of medium density, juicy, has a slight astringency and a light nutmeg aftertaste.
  • Variety “Williams red” is a medium-sized variety. The fruits are medium in size. The color of the peel of a ripe fruit is burgundy or red. The ripening period of the crop falls on the third decade of August. Perfect for preservation.

These varieties are deservedly recognized by experienced gardeners, and the reviews about them are only positive. With favorable climatic conditions and proper care, a large and high-quality harvest of healthy and tasty fruits is simply guaranteed to you!
