Our doctor’s opinion on in vitro fertilization

As part of its quality approach, Passeportsanté.net invites you to discover the opinion of a health professional. Dr Catherine Solano, general practitioner and sex therapist, gives you her opinion on the in vitro fertilization :

In vitro fertilization is nowadays a very well mastered technique, since it has now existed for almost 40 years. If you are a couple wanting a child, you must first wait one to two years to see if a natural pregnancy occurs. Then, if this is not the case, it is first necessary to make a complete infertility assessment in both partners. If the cause of infertility is established, an appropriate treatment will be offered to you, not necessarily in vitro fertilization.

The chances of having a child using in vitro fertilization depend on several factors, including the age of the parents, the cause of infertility and the lifestyle of both parents. In addition, the stages of fertilization are long, invasive and very expensive (except in Quebec, France or Belgium where they are covered by Health Insurance). Your gynecologist will be able to advise you on which method gives you the best chance of success.
