According to the authors, obese women are less likely to get a job than slim competitors. Worse still, obese women witharabia much less than others. Dr. Kerry O’Brien, professor at Monash University and the University of Manchester explains that the participants of the study – potential employers – they were not aware the true nature of this study. They were asked to look at a series of CVs with a photo of the candidate and had to categorize the applicants’ abilities, starting wages, and job skills. – We used photos of women before and after bariatric surgery and observed changes depending on whether participants read a CV with a photo of an obese woman (BMI from 38 to 41) or the same woman but with a normal weight (BMI from 22 to 24), after bariatric surgery. We found more severe discrimination for all selection criteria such as pay, leadership potential, as well as the likelihood of selecting an obese candidate for a certain position – explains prof. O’Brien. Scientists found that high levels “Anti-obesity” superstitions it goes hand in hand with a high risk of discriminating against obese applicants.
