General description of the disease

 

Migraine is a disease characterized by attacks of severe headache caused by cerebral vasospasm.

Types and symptoms of migraine

Common migraine – a type of migraine, in which the painful spasm can last 4-72 hours. Its symptoms are: a pulsating nature of pain of moderate or severe intensity, its one-sided localization and intensification with walking or physical exertion. Also, there may be phonophobia (sound intolerance), photophobia (light intolerance) and vomiting and / or nausea.

Classic migraine – painful spasm is preceded by an aura, which is characterized by incomprehensible auditory, gustatory or olfactory sensations, blurred vision (“sparkles” or “fog” in front of the eyes), impaired hand sensitivity. The duration of the aura can vary from 5 minutes to one hour, the aura ends when a painful spasm occurs or immediately before it.

Healthy foods for migraines

For migraines, a diet low in tyramine is recommended. Recommended products include:

 
  • decaffeinated coffee and sodas, soda;
  • fresh eggs, freshly steamed poultry, meat, fish;
  • dairy products (2% milk, processed cheese or low fat cheese);
  • cereals, flour products, pastes (for example, factory-made yeast dishes, biscuits, cereals);
  • fresh vegetables (carrots, asparagus, fried or boiled onions, tomatoes, potatoes, legumes, zucchini, beets, pumpkin);
  • fresh fruits (pears, apples, cherries, apricots, peaches);
  • homemade soups;
  • spice;
  • sugar, muffins, various types of honey, biscuits, jellies, jams, candies;
  • natural fresh juices (grapefruit, orange, grape, beetroot, cucumber, carrot, spinach juice, celery juice);
  • foods that contain magnesium (wild salmon, pumpkin seeds, halibut, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, quinoa, flax).

It is also recommended to consume foods with riboflavin (vitamin B2), which protect brain cells from oxidative damage, promotes the absorption of iron, zinc, folic acid, vitamin B3, B12, B1. These include: lean beef, venison, lamb, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.

Traditional medicine for migraines

  • decoction of dogwood fruits;
  • cold inhalations from a mixture of ammonia and camphor alcohol;
  • sauerkraut compress on the temporal part of the head and behind the ears;
  • a cocktail made from a fresh egg filled with boiling milk;
  • whey or buttermilk, which should be taken on an empty stomach;
  • infusion of meadow clover (pour a tablespoon of flowers with a glass of boiling water, leave for one hour), take half a glass three times a day;
  • a compress of fresh lilac leaves on the temporal and frontal part of the head;
  • juice from raw potatoes, take a quarter cup twice a day;
  • infusion of Siberian elderberry (one tablespoon of dried flowers per glass of boiling water, leave for one hour), take a quarter cup up to four times a day fifteen minutes before meals;
  • herbal infusion of oregano, narrow-leaved fireweed and peppermint (mix in equal proportions) – pour one tablespoon of the mixture with 1,5 cups of boiling water, leave for an hour, take one glass of the infusion for painful spasm;
  • strong green tea;
  • juice of fresh viburnum or black currant, take a quarter cup four times a day;
  • lemon balm infusion (three tablespoons of lemon balm for one glass of boiling water, leave for an hour), take two tablespoons five times a day;
  • medicinal baths with valerian decoction;
  • infusion of pharmacy chamomile (one tablespoon of flowers per glass of boiling water, leave for one hour), take half a glass four times a day.

Dangerous and harmful foods for migraines

Limit the use of such foods:

  • strong coffee, tea, hot chocolate (more than two glasses a day);
  • sausage, bacon, sausages, ham, smoked beef, caviar;
  • parmesan, curdled milk, yogurt, sour cream (no more than half a glass a day);
  • sour dough bread, yeast homemade dough;
  • fresh onions;
  • bananas, avocados, red plums, dates, raisins, citrus fruits (tangerines, oranges, pineapples, grapefruits, lemons) – no more than half a glass;
  • concentrated meat broths, quick and Chinese soups that contain monosodium glutamate, yeast;
  • ice cream (no more than 1 glass), products that contain chocolate (no more than 15 gr.).

Exclude the use of such products:

  • alcoholic beverages (vermouth, sherry, ale, beer) soft drinks in metal cans;
  • salted, pickled, smoked, stale, canned, or spicy foods (eg liverwurst, salami, liver);
  • long-aged cheeses (Roquefort, Swiss, emmentyler, chedar);
  • any prohibited food additives;
  • soy sauce, pickled and canned legumes and soy products;
  • cereals and nuts;
  • meat pies.
