Where does the New Year’s Eve tradition come from?
This tradition dates back to the Romans. The word “strenna” comes from a wood dedicated to the goddess Strena, in which it was customary to cut twigs that were sent to kings, as a sign of good omen, at the beginning of each new year. Over time, gifts turned into coins and silver medals.
The custom of giving gifts on January 1 has now almost disappeared, blending with the tradition of Christmas on December 25. New Year’s gifts now designate donations to thank certain services and usually take place between late November and late January.
Who is it customary to give New Year’s gifts?

Amount of money or gift?
In some cases, the question does not even arise.

For the janitor, a small envelope containing about 10% of the monthly rent is the most appropriate present.

A full-time cleaning lady can legitimately expect to receive around $ 45. A sum which varies according to the regularity and the load of its work. Depending on the relationship you have with her, you can also opt for a more personal gift: chocolates, pashmina, etc.
It is more difficult to offer money to the nanny or the childminder. Some may feel embarrassed. Depending on your degree of sympathy, choose a more or less personal gift. Basket filled, flowers, bottle of champagne are among the most popular and will be even more touching accompanied by a pretty greeting card with the photo of your child.
