Neck pain, what is it?

Definition of neck pain

Neck pain is defined by pain felt in the neck, from the upper back to the neck. These pains generally subside within a few days or even a few weeks. Neck pain often does not have serious consequences.

Neck pain is often associated with sleeping in a bad position, prolonged computer use (amplified by maintaining a bad position). Or the tension of an upper body muscle, caused by poor posture.

Anxiety and stress can also lead to the development of neck pain, by tensioning the muscles of the neck.

Anyone can be affected by the development of neck pain. The elderly are, however, more prone to the development of cervical spondylosis.

Causes of neck pain

The main cause, associated with neck pain, is sleeping in the wrong position. Indeed, waking up and feeling a sharp pain in the neck is common. It is a stiff neck. The latter originates in particular from poor posture, maintained during sleep.

Another cause can be associated with neck pain: cervical spondylosis. The latter appears naturally with age. Some patients do not experience any symptoms. Others experience stiffness and pain in the neck. Damage to nearby nerves can cause radiation to the arms, or tingling in the hands and legs.

Whiplash is caused by a sudden movement of the head. These traumatic movements can cause some damage to the ligaments and tendons of the neck. In this sense, stiffness felt in the neck, difficulty in performing certain movements, or pain in the neck and head, are associated with it.

A stuck nerve in the neck can also be the source of neck pain.

Symptoms of neck pain

There are different conditions and symptoms associated with neck pain. The general clinical signs are:

  • neck pain
  • nerve damage, causing difficulty in performing certain movements
  • possibly inexplicable weight loss
  • a feverish state

Symptoms, such as persistent tingling in the hands or legs, significant muscle weakness or regular imbalances, require a consultation with the doctor, as soon as possible.

How to prevent neck pain?

Some measures can help prevent neck pain:

  • maintaining an appropriate posture, particularly during office work
  • take regular breaks to limit tension in the neck and neck
  • avoid the state of stress and chronic anxiety. For this, relaxation techniques can help limit these states of stress.
  • use a good quality pillow and mattress

How to treat neck pain?

There is no specific drug treatment for neck pain. Only painkillers can alleviate the pain felt. Stretching and massaging are also helpful in treating neck pain.

Surgery is only prescribed in the context of potential damage to the vertebral discs

For patients with chronic pain, physiotherapy or osteopathy may be recommended.
