Summer is melon season. We marry it with mozzarella, basil, port, balsamic or cured ham. It makes our meals tastier but it is also excellent for the health.

Are you crazy about melon? Now is the time to take advantage of it. Melon is the ultimate summer vegetable. Not only is it a tasty product but it is also a food that takes care of our health. We will explain through the menu why it is high time to make melon, the king of our plates this summer.

1. Melon is very low in calories

Melon is very low in calories, which makes it our undisputed ally in summer. There are indeed only 34 calories in 100 g of melon. It is waterlogged and contains very little fat. And yet, it offers a real feeling of satiety. Eat half a melon as a starter and you will feel like you’re full. If you had to choose between a melon-based recipe for the starter or for the dessert, we definitely recommend that you choose the starter.

Melon can also be eaten for afternoon tea. In case of a little hunger, it is better to cut yourself a slice of melon than to throw yourself on a packet of cookies. The melon is refreshing and very decomplexing.

2. Melon reduces the risk of cancer

Melon is also rich in flavonoids, antioxidants which play a protective role against breast cancer or colon cancer in particular. Studies have shown that a particular species of melon, bitter melon, has the ability to stop the growth of carcinogenic cells thanks to its high content of antioxidants. Administered to mice suffering from pancreatic cancer, this melon would even have allowed a reduction of more than 60% of the tumor, without any side effects.

Antioxidants indeed allow our body to protect yourself from the effects of free radicals that come from pollution, chemicals or cigarette smoke. Eating melon would therefore be a way to reduce the risk of one day developing cancer.

3. Melon is rich in vitamin A

Melon contains a high concentration of vitamin A. However, this vitamin allows skin cells to regenerate. It helps to fight against cellulite or the formation of stretch marks but also against wrinkles. It is also used in the prevention of macular degeneration in the eyes.

But that’s not all, the vitamin A present in melon, also called carotenoid, will allow your body to guarding against certain external aggressions like viruses or bacteria because it strengthens immune function. A person who suffers from vitamin A deficiency will be more prone to respiratory inflammation for example. Melon is also rich in vitamin C, a vitamin that is also very effective in resisting infections.

4. Melon fights water retention

Do you suffer from heavy legs in hot weather? Do your hands and feet swell from the heat? You will then be amazed to discover that melon effectively fights against water retention. Rich in mineral salts, potassium and calcium, it eliminates excess water and thus limits swelling.

Melon also has diuretic properties. It allows the body to purify itself by eliminating toxins and the kidneys to stay healthy. Summer the melon is very thirst-quenching, which is an added bonus.

5. Melon helps fight hypertension

As we have said, melon is rich in potassium. However, many studies have shown that a diet rich in potassium was as effective in fighting hypertension as reducing salt intake. A person who suffers from hypertension would therefore benefit from consuming melon regularly. To eat half of a melon amounts to providing your body with 20% of the recommended daily intake of potassium.

It should be noted that combining a significant intake of potassium with a reduction in salt will achieve a better reduction in blood pressure.
