Meals for difficult children

Making sure a picky child eats a balanced diet is not easy. However, it only takes a few good ideas to make them love all the foods that will be beneficial for their health.

Help picky eaters enjoy fruit

Children often have a clear preference for sweet. Therefore, making them appreciate the fruits is not so difficult. However, whole fruits may not be accepted because they are too difficult to eat. Why not serve them in the form of juice, compote or even jam. For the most recalcitrant toddlers, it is now possible to create homemade juices by selecting the fruits.

For a balanced snack, it is possible to grate apples in a cake so that they go unnoticed. To introduce the little ones to fruits, we also think of chocolate fondue! The fruits can be served with sugar, whipped cream, yogurt, ice cream or even cakes. They can be dried, baked or cooked. In short, it takes a lot of imagination.

Incorporating vegetables into meals for picky eaters

Vegetables are generally not popular with children. Getting them to eat these healthy foods sometimes requires trickery. To do this, we therefore think of hiding vegetables in meat preparations such as lasagna, shepherd’s pie, pasta with bolognese, cakes and even meatballs.

To pass the vegetables, you have to choose the meats with which they will be associated. We think of lightly smoked meats, minced meat or even poultry. Some vegetables, such as tomatoes, are very easy to cook, but you can also color mashed potatoes pink with beets. Little girls love it!

Ruse with adapted recipes

To make difficult children eat, you have to cook and especially offer adapted recipes. The most shunned foods then become succulent dishes and our pretty darlings ask for more. Among the recipes to favor, we find donuts. Crispy and delicious, donuts are fun foods that can be dipped in our favorite sauces. In the same spirit, it is possible to create vegetable croquettes, pancakes or even pizzas full of colors. Finally, vegetable crisps are sure to appeal to crunchy lovers.

Create “repapéro” for difficult children

A “repapéro” is an improved aperitif or a balanced version of the TV set. It consists :

– small cubes of cheese;

– cubes of ham;

– toasts on which we find seafood rillettes or fresh cheese;

– cut vegetables to soak in healthy sauces such as fromage blanc, tomato sauce or a light version of mayonnaise;

– balanced appetizers;

– balls of melon and watermelon, etc.

This meal, usually taken on weekends, appeals to children because they can nibble and discover new flavors. To impress them, we focus on color and variety. Guaranteed success!

Understanding the child

More often than not, when a child refuses to eat, we tend to get upset. It is a mistake ! Toddlers should not associate a meal with a conflict but with a moment of sharing. To ease tension, it may be a good idea to talk with children who refuse to eat so that you can understand their behavior. We can also offer more fun dishes, bearing the image of their favorite hero or have them participate in the preparation of the meals.

Adapt to better manage meals for difficult children

For a child to eat enough, it is also necessary to adapt. It is not dramatic if a toddler eats the same thing several times in the same week, especially if the proposed meal is balanced. Does your child like cucumbers? Offer him as a starter. Does he like clementines? He can eat it every day!

Young children have needs, but in order to grow well, they must first feed themselves. So sometimes it’s better to give them what they like instead of going hungry. Of course, we will opt for healthy foods such as yogurt or a plate of pasta.

When we notice that a child is tired, emaciated or weakened, it is necessary to call a health professional. The first step is to do a check-up with the attending physician or the pediatrician who follows the child. The latter will be able to refer his young patient to a nutritionist, a allergist or another specialist depending on the diagnosis.
