Jasmine pruning: in autumn, after flowering
Often in the gardens you can find mock orange – a flowering perennial shrub. People call it garden jasmine. For its resistance to harsh winters, as well as delicate and fragrant flowers, gardeners love it very much. But full bloom requires regular pruning of jasmine. This procedure has some peculiarities and should be carried out in compliance with the recommendations of specialists.
Jasmine pruning is a must for good growth and flowering
The procedure should be carried out annually. The dense crown of the shrub looks unkempt without pruning, loses its decorative effect. Old shoots interfere with the normal growth of new ones, the development of the bush slows down.
The best time for this is autumn. The growing season is coming to an end, the plant slows down life processes for winter rest. There are several rules for pruning:
- It is better to have time to do this before the onset of frost – at a positive temperature, the tissues of the bush are less injured.
- Autumn pruning is carried out with the aim of rejuvenating the bush, getting rid of diseased shoots, thinning. For this, well-sharpened tools are used: a delimber or pruner.
- We remove all dry, crooked branches, damaged and affected by diseases. Treat the cut sites with garden pitch, this will protect the shoots from drying out and help to rehabilitate faster after such an operation.
As a result, the plant will direct new forces towards the formation of shoots and flowers. If you stop pruning for at least 2 years in a row, the plant will stop blooming.
Does jasmine need pruning after flowering
The next stage of crown formation is carried out in the spring, before bud formation. The bush is put in order after winter:
- Broken branches can be seen on it. They are not cut at the root, but only shortened as necessary.
- Frozen shoots are also removed to live wood.
- You can thin out the plant a little if the crown is too thick.
Still, you should not get carried away with this process: too many cut off shoots will lead to weak flowering.
In the middle of summer, jasmine fades. Now it needs to be put in order again:
- Remove the remaining inflorescences with a sharp secateurs.
- After summer pruning, do not process the cuts.
- If some shoots are too long and knocked out of the total mass, they can be cut off.
We must remove dry and wilted inflorescences. This will conserve the vigor of the plant and give it an attractive appearance. The procedure is carried out in the middle or at the end of summer.
