Identity card and passport for her baby

Identity card and passport application for her baby

If you go on a trip abroad with your baby, be aware that a newborn is subject to the same rules that any minor : he must have an identity document in his name. A national identity card (CNI) is sufficient to travel within the European Union. To travel to other countries, he will need an individual passport. If a visa is also required to enter the country in question, the newborn will not escape the rule either.

If you are flying with baby for a domestic flight in France, also provide papers for the baby. The airlines set the boarding conditions and some require papers for children under 2 years old. Check with the companies beforehand.

The national identity card, a first possibility

To get a national identity card (CNI) for your baby, you can pre-request online. Then, you can go to a town hall authorized to issue a CNI by appointment. The presence of the child is required when filing the application. You will also need to provide vouchers :

  • – your identity card or passport (certifying that you are the legal guardian of the child)
  • – identity photos to standards
  • – proof of address
  • – birth certificate
  • – online pre-request number

How long does it take to make a baby identity card?

As the identity card is not produced on site, it cannot be issued immediately, whether on the first request or upon renewal. Must therefore pay attention to key times of the year, especially with the approach of summer vacation, where the demands are more numerous. To find out the deadlines, there is an interactive voice server, the 34 00 (Choice 4 then 3 then department number), specially designed for this, and the cost of which is that of a local call. From overseas or abroad, contact 0033 9 70 83 07 07. It is also possible to follow your request on the ANTS website.

Namely

Obtaining the card is free and it is valid for ten years. It usually takes three weeks to obtain the card, but you can track your application online. Please note, after it has been made available, your baby’s identity card must be withdrawn within a maximum of 3 months.

Passport, valid for 5 years for children under 15

To obtain a passport, make your pre-application online using the dedicated tele-service. You will need to purchase a dematerialized fiscal stamp during this step. After registering you will receive a pre-request number and a QR code to be presented to the town hall with the supporting documents. The documents to be provided are the same as for the CNI. If the child already has an identity card, bring it as well. Remember to make an appointment! The time to obtain it varies according to the department and if the holidays are approaching, it can lengthen significantly so anticipate. For minors, the passport is only valid for five years (compared to ten for adults).

Note: it is now payable for all minors. Its amount is 17 euros in fiscal stamp for a minor under 15 years old, and 42 euros for minors between 15 and 17 years old.

Baby ID: the rules to follow for photo ID

Whether you choose the national identity card or passport, the identity photo of the newborn must respect the current standards since 2005: the baby’s head must be straight, he must look at the camera, have his eyes perfectly open, adopt a neutral expression and have his mouth closed. Suffice to say that it is better to be patient on the one hand, and on the other hand to have recourse to the services of a professional or to go to a cabin approved by the Ministry of the Interior.

The photo must measure: 35mm wide and 45mm high and face; from 32 to 36 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the skull. On a plain background (not white), the color photo must be well contrasted.
