Hyaluronic acid injection: all you need to know about this aesthetic medicine

Injecting hyaluronic acid (HA) to hydrate, boost or plump certain areas of the face has become a common practice in aesthetic medicine.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid has risen in recent years to the rank of star active in the cosmetics sector as well as in the world of aesthetic medicine. Present naturally in the body, it ensures hydration and elasticity of the skin by absorbing and retaining water in the deep layers of the dermis. This kind of “super-sponge” is able to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water.

But over time, the natural production of hyaluronic acid is less efficient. Its quantity decreases and the skin loses its tone.

Why do hyaluronic acid injections?

“Hyaluronic acid injections make it possible to fill this deficit and restore the face’s tone,” explains Doctor David Modiano, a renowned aesthetic doctor in Paris.

There are two types of hyaluronic acid injections:

  • non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid – “skin booster” – recommended for children under 35 and to hydrate and prevent skin aging;
  • crosslinked hyaluronic acid, making it possible to fill in or increase volumes.

“Hyaluronic acid comes in the form of a more or less thick transparent gel. This texture makes it possible to treat all types of wrinkles. It is also possible to compensate for the volume losses linked to the melting of subcutaneous fat ”, explains Dr Modiano.

Currently one of the most widely used products in aesthetic medicine, hyaluronic acid has the advantage of being absorbable, that is to say that it will be naturally eliminated by the body. A reassuring reversibility for people who want to give their face a boost without permanently modifying it.

Reshape your face with hyaluronic acid

Cross-linked hyaluronic acid injections – that is to say non-fluid – also offer the possibility of reshaping certain parts of the face in a non-invasive way, without a scalpel. This is particularly the case with medical rhinoplasty. In less than 30 minutes, the specialist can correct a bump on the nose, for example by injecting and then modeling the product with his fingers before it freezes.

The star product is also particularly popular for injections into the lips, to moisturize or redraw by providing a slight volume for example.

The results are immediate and can last up to about 18 months.

What areas of the face can we act on?

Used all over the face to hydrate and restore radiance, crosslinked hyaluronic acid is more administered to areas where wrinkles are most likely to develop such as nasolabial folds, the most bitterness or again the lion’s wrinkle.

The neck, décolleté or even the hands can also be treated. Hyaluronic acid injections are not confined to the face, but if it is the area most requested by patients.

The injections are done “at the head of the client”. The doctor adapts the quantity injected according to the patient’s expectations but also to the harmony of the face.

How is the session going?

The injection is done directly in the aesthetic doctor’s office and does not last more than 30 minutes. The bites are more or less painful depending on the areas to be treated and the sensitivity of each.

Small redness and slight swelling may appear within minutes of the injections.

How much does an injection of hyaluronic acid cost?

Prices vary depending on the number of syringes needed and the type of hyaluronic acid used. Count on average 300 €. The first appointment with the cosmetic doctor is generally free and allows you to make a quote.

How long do the results last?

The durability of hyaluronic acid depends on the type of product used, the lifestyle and metabolism of each. It is estimated that the product resolves naturally after 12 to 18 months.
