How to split a coconut

Coconuts are delicious and flavorful, especially when eaten fresh. Inside the coconut there is dense coconut pulp (copra) with a pleasant peculiar taste and aroma and clear, salty-sweet coconut water.

Although coconut has a fairly tough skin, it is easy enough to split it! By following these instructions, you can easily split the coconut into two halves. You will need a glass, a small hammer and a nail.

1. On one side of the coconut there are 3 black dots (“eyes”). Two of them will be tightly closed, and one will easily succumb to the pressure of a nail, which must be driven into the coconut by light tapping of a hammer about half. Instead of a nail, you can use other sharp objects (scissors, knitting needle, screwdriver).

2. Turn and pull the nail several times.

3. Drain the coconut juice into a glass through the hole.

4. Now take the coconut in one hand and the hammer in the other. We measure about 1/3 from the top of the coconut (from the side with black dots) and begin to tap on the shell in a circular direction. It is necessary to knock with sufficient effort, but without fanaticism.

5. After a few minutes of continuous tapping, a crack will appear. Continue knocking until the crack is “encircling” the entire coconut.

6. And now we just divide the coconut in the split into two halves, helping ourselves with a nail or other object (for example, a knife or scissors).
