In anticipation of the baby, future parents will have to purchase a lot of things that will be needed in the first months of the child’s life. One of these essential items is a diaper. Of course, you can buy several dozen in the store, or you can make them yourself, which will be much cheaper for you.

What fabric to choose for diapers for a newborn

The skin of a small child is delicate and sensitive, so only delicate fabrics are suitable for him. It will be optimal if you purchase natural cotton fabric: – chintz; – flannel; – linen; – calico. Please note that no synthetic fibers have been added to the fabric. It is better to purchase two types of fabric – thin (chintz, linen or coarse calico), from which it will be possible to make light diapers, and thick flannel, from which the diapers will come out warmer. It’s good if the fabric is not just white, but with a funny pattern – after all, you are creating a thing, the appearance of which should please both you and the baby.

How many diapers does a newborn need

The number of diapers you need depends on whether you plan to swaddle your baby or if you prefer to dress him in blouses and pants. If you choose swaddling, then it is advisable to have about 30 diapers already in the first month of your baby’s life. You can make a dozen thin 80×120 diapers that will be convenient to use while bathing or to lay where you want to put your naked baby. You will also need diapers measuring 120×120 – they will be most convenient for changing immediately after the baby is born. Finally, make some 120×150 diapers as babies grow fast and you will soon need larger diapers.

If the baby was born large, sew more diapers in 120×150 format, because soon you will only be able to use them

Making a diaper is quite simple, and problems should not arise even for women who have not been fond of sewing before. Cut the fabric into rectangles to the desired size. Remember that the fabric may shrink after washing.

It is better to find out this point in advance from the seller and, when cutting, set aside an additional amount of material for shrinkage. Also set aside one to two centimeters on each side for processing.

It is best to use an overlocker for finishing the edges of the diaper. If you do not have this device at your disposal and you do not want to go to the atelier, fold the edge twice and sew it with a zigzag or simple stitch. You can take contrasting threads – so baby diapers will look more fun.

After you have hemmed the edges of each diaper, wash them with baby powder and iron on both sides. The dowry for the baby, which will certainly come in handy in the first months of life, is ready.
