How are fertile days calculated?

Hello, my name is Natalia and I am currently 18 years old. I have been menstruating for several years, but quite irregularly. My cycles last anywhere from 28 to 30 days, but this way my cycle worked right from the start and it was never like clockwork. I would like to ask you how long they last fertile days and how to calculate them? Especially in a situation like mine. We want to start intercourse with my partner, so calculating the number of fertile days is a very important information for me, because I do not want to get pregnant.

I just wonder if in the situation of such cycles as mine, it is possible to calculate precisely how long the fertile days last and when do they start? If so, what methods will be best for me to calculate when they begin and how long are my fertile days? On various websites, I found calculators and measurements of the number of fertile days, but there is always information about entering the duration of the cycle, and for me it is different, and in total I have never received specific information about how many fertile days last in my accident. Are you able to help me with this problem and indicate whether it makes sense to calculate when they start and how many fertile days last?

In the book, a woman’s monthly cycle lasts 28 days, it is the time counted between the first day of a given period and the first day of the next menstruation. Monthly bleeding starts the cycle and lasts until the 7th day of the cycle at the latest. On the 14th day of the cycle, ovulation should occur and the egg’s lifetime is 24 hours. This information must be taken into account – the woman is fertile for the next day after the onset of ovulation. However, fertile days last longer than 24 hours, because they depend on the viability of sperm, which, depending on the source, are able to survive in the woman’s reproductive tract from 4 to 7 days! For this reason, theoretically, fertile days fall on days 7-15 of the cycle. However, this would be the case in an ideal world, but just as each of us differs externally, we are not identical internally.

Intercourse on the day of ovulation gives the best chance of conceiving a child (30-40%). Symptoms of ovulation are: cervical discharge with the appearance of “egg white” – after emptying and wiping the area of the vaginal vestibule, insert clean fingers into the vagina and touch the cervix. After removing the fingers from the vagina, mucus is visible. If it looks like the protein of a broken egg, you can stretch it 5 cm between your fingers – this is fertile mucus. During the internal examination, you can also recognize whether the cervix has decreased compared to the previous days – if so, you can say that these are fertile days. The basal temperature of the body, measured in the oral cavity or vagina, seems to be the easiest to examine, and its increase by 0.4-1.0 degrees C in relation to the normal temperature for a given woman indicates ovulation.

Although explained above NPR method (natural family planning, the Rötzer’s method) is highly effective when used ideally, but if you lead a different lifestyle every day, shift work or have irregular periods, this method may not be sufficient. To compare different methods of contraception, the Perl index is used, which is the number of unintended births to the number of women using a given method for a year. So, if the Pearl index is 3, it means that 3 out of 100 women using a given method of contraception become pregnant despite using it correctly. The most effective method of contraception is the combined contraceptive pill with a Pearl Index of 0.1-0.9, i.e. 1-9 women out of 1000 using the contraceptive pill become pregnant. For comparison, the Pearl Index for a condom is 2-12 and for the Natural Family Planning method is 0.8-3.
