How does the school card work?

The school map: instructions for use

What is the school card? “When there are several schools on the territory of a municipality, the mayor, for whom it is the competence, carries out a sectorization in order to balance the number of pupils between the different schools. VS‘that is to say, it specifies in which school the pupils should be assigned according to their place of residence in the municipality. This sectorisation is the subject of a deliberation in the municipal council ”, explains the Ministry of National Education and Youth. Student assignments are therefore part of a general balance between the different establishments. “Every year, the Academic Director of National Education Services (DASEN), who represents the rector in a department, carries out school card operations, that is to say, he distributes the teaching posts between the schools of the department for which he is responsible, ”continues the Ministry of Education. ‘National Education.

School map: what are the possible changes?

according to school card, your place of residence depends on a school in the city, most often the nearest one, but not always. If the school in question does not suit you, for a valid reason, you can ask the mayor, whose competence it is, for an exemption from the sectorization. Indeed, if the school map takes into account the evolution of the population and the reception capacities of schools, it must also assess the obligations of families.

Parents can then ask the mayor, whose competence it is, for an exemption from the sectorization. But he is free to respond favorably or not.

What are the cases that can justify an exemption from the school card?

In the following cases, a exemption request to the school map may be favorably examined. But this is not an obligation, only the mayor’s decision counts.

  • The presence of a big brother or a big sister in the school you want, or the proximity to a nursery that welcomes a younger child.
  • The proximity to the workplace of one or the other of the parents is also a good argument.
  • A medical care of the child, the follow-up of a particular school course recognized by the Direction of the Departmental Services of National Education.
  • The proximity of the home of the nanny in charge of picking up the child, as well as possibly that of the grandparents if they look after the child after school.

First make sure that the school in the area you are targeting still has Available seats. Then, fill out an exemption request form at the town hall. You will need to attach vouchers, and often a letter detailing the reasons for your approach. It is the committee of derogation which will assess your request, and you will obtain a response during the month of June preceding the start of the school year.
