The recognized expert represented the Republic of South Africa, where the problem of HIV is extremely common. Her death is a big loss for the global healthcare sector fighting HIV and AIDS.
Professor Gita Ramjee, a respected expert in HIV research, died from complications from COVID-19. She was first exposed to the coronavirus in mid-March when she returned to South Africa from the United Kingdom. There, she participated in a symposium at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Authority in the field of HIV research
Professor Ramjee was recognized as an authority in the field of HIV research. Over the years, the expert has been involved in finding new solutions to reduce the spread of HIV among women. She was the scientific director of the Aurum Institute, and she collaborated with the University of Cape Town and the University of Washington. Two years ago, she was awarded the Outstanding Female Scientist Award, an award granted by the European Development Clinical Trials Partnerships.
According to Medexpress, Winnie Byanyima, the head of the UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Program to Combat HIV and AIDS) project in an interview with the BBC described Ramjee’s death as a huge loss, especially now when the world needs it most. The loss of such a valued researcher is also a blow to South Africa – this country is home to the largest number of people with HIV in the world.
As David Mabuza, vice president of South Africa said, the departure of prof. Ramjee is the loss of its champion against the HIV epidemic, which unfortunately happened as a result of another global pandemic.
