Greece yesterday and today: legends of ancient antiquity

Amazing and unique Greece, spread out under the azure sky of the Mediterranean, and to this day keeps the mysteries of antiquity. To experience the intoxicating atmosphere of ancient times to the very depths, you need to separate yourself from the crowd of tourists and make your own journey. And the best way to do this is by car, which you can rent from a rental company, such as Avis.

Греция вчера и сегодня: преданья старины античной

One of the most interesting routes starts in Athens. Following the highway to the west, you can admire the Corinth Canal, which connects the Aegean and Ionian Seas. After 40 km, you will see Mycenae-a legendary fortress city built of timeless limestone boulders. If you turn south, you will soon find yourself in the most famous corner of the Peloponnese, the heroic Sparta. Then the route goes west, past the Langada Gorge, which is considered the most exciting road in Greece. In the city of Kalamata, you should look at the olive plantation, known for excellent olives all over the world. You can continue exploring the local cuisine in one of the restaurants, where you should definitely try the signature pig on the spit.

After a hearty lunch, you will have a long but interesting journey-112 km along the serene Ionian Sea straight to the legendary Olympia. After passing the ancient sanctuary, you will need to cross the Gulf of Corinth on the bridge to enjoy the enchanting seascape. In Galaxidi, it is convenient to make a stop, and at the same time try the delicious local grilled fish.

In the morning, with fresh forces, you can move further north, to Delphi with its famous oracle. Following the signs on the highway leading through the mountain range, it is easy to find Thermopylae. It was in this narrow mountain pass that a group of fearless Spartans led by King Leonidas and an army of Persians met in an unequal battle. And not far from here, the thermal baths are bubbling, in which tourists splash enthusiastically.

After a night spent in the town of Kamena Vurla, you can go back to Athens. This route passes by another notable place — the city of Marathon. According to legend, after the victory of the Greeks over the Persians at Marathon, a messenger ran 41 km to Athens to announce the joyful news of the triumph. It is believed that this gave birth to the idea of creating a marathon run.
