Fishing in Belarus is known far beyond the borders of the country; guests from near and far abroad come here for recreation. One of the largest reservoirs that are part of the Vileika-Minsk water system is an artificial reservoir. Fishing on the Vileika reservoir does not depend on the season; not only the fisherman, but also his whole family can spend time here with benefit.
Description of the Vileika reservoir
The Vileika reservoir is the largest artificial reservoir in Belarus. It is also called the Minsk Sea because of its large size:
- length 27 km;
- width about 3 km;
- the total area is almost 74 sq. km.
The depth of the reservoir is relatively small, the maximum is 13 m. The coastline is fixed artificially.
In the Minsk region, the construction of a reservoir began in 1968, and it was flooded only in 1975. The Vileika reservoir is of great value for the capital of Belarus, it is from it that all enterprises of the city take water, and also use resources for the needs of the population.
To fill the Minsk Sea with water, several villages were flooded, old people say, if you put your ear to the shore, you can hear the bell ringing.
Animal and plant life
The shores of the Vileika reservoir are covered with forests, pines predominate, but some deciduous trees are also quite common. This attracts some animals and encourages their reproduction.
The Zaslavskoe reservoir is very similar in fauna to the Vileika reservoir, beavers and muskrats are found on their banks, wild boars, goats, raccoon dogs, and elks hide in the depths of the forests. Of the birds, it is impossible not to notice woodpeckers, capercaillie, snipes and hawks.
The flora is very well developed, in addition to mighty pines, ash and elms can be found in the forest. It is impossible to list all herbs, but forget-me-not, thyme, buttercup cannot be confused with anything.
The Vileika reservoir breeds different types of fish in its waters, the Chigirin reservoir boasts the same diversity of species. The difference will be in quantity, and so on both reservoirs you can meet:
- pike;
- chub;
- asp;
- pike perch;
- perch;
- carp;
- crucian carp;
- roach;
- rudd;
- sazana;
- bleak;
- line.
Other types of fish are also present, but they are much rarer.
Features of fishing on the Vileika reservoir

Fishing in winter on the Vileika reservoir
In winter, you can meet a lot of anglers on the reservoir, everyone catches with their tackle and does not reveal the secret to anyone. Predatory fish species often become a trophy, but you can also pull a decent amount of roach.
Most often, mormyshkas with bloodworms are used, but a nozzleless one will work well. For a predator, bastards, spinners, balancers, rattlins are used. It is better to fish in cloudy weather, sunny days will bring a minimum catch.
Spring fishing
The weather in Vileyka for the month of March often does not obey the forecasts of weather forecasters, it can be said for sure that at the very beginning of spring it will not work to fish in open water. But on the last ice you can get a good trophy of a predator, pike perch and pike rush at everything before spawning.
In mid-April, they begin to catch asp, it will respond well to artificial baits in the form of masks and flies. Pike and pike perch are still sluggish after spawning, crucians and cyprinids have to be taken out from the bottom with the help of bait and animal bait. After a week of actively warming the sun, fishing on the Vileika reservoir takes on a completely different scale, the fish are caught more actively, and the shores are simply dotted with fishermen.
Fishing in the summer
The Chigirinskoe reservoir is not much different from the Vileika reservoir, which is why in the summer period fish are caught on these reservoirs with the same gear. Most often, a feeder, a float tackle is used, and before the evening dawn, you can get a spinning rod.
The use of bait to catch peaceful fish is mandatory; without it, success in this matter cannot be achieved. Both animal and vegetable variants are used as bait. Worm, maggot, corn, peas will attract the attention of carp, bream, carp, silver bream, roach.
The predator is lured with wobblers and silicone, turntables and oscillators will also work well.
Fishing in autumn
The forecast for biting fish in the pond in the autumn varies from year to year, but it is worth noting that since October, pike and zander are caught here in good sizes. During this period, the weather in Vileyka is unstable for 14 days, rains and winds can mix the cards for anglers. Only the most persistent and stubborn 5th region will give an excellent catch both for spinning blanks, and for feeder and snacks.

The reservoir is considered relatively shallow, the maximum mark is set at 13 meters, but there are not many such places. Fishermen with experience say. What is best to fish at depths of 7-8 meters, it is this depth that prevails in the reservoir.
