Fencing for children

Fencing from 5 years old

Fencing is a combat sport which is taught in a club at the departmental level and which is attached to the French Fencing Federation. For the youngest, from 5 years old, this sporting activity is offered in the form of “awakening-fencing” or “baby fencing” lessons, at an initiation level. For the first technical knowledge, it is necessary to wait until the age of 8 years.

Fencing for all

The pedagogy is adapted to toddlers and it is entirely built around the interest of young practitioners. All children can practice fencing, so you don’t need to have specific skills. They all start fencing at the same level.

Fencing develops in children speed in the execution of gestures, precision, good coordination, and ultimately, muscle tone.

On the budget side, count the compulsory license between 8 and 30 euros, depending on age. Not to mention the annual subscription between 120 and 300 euros, depending on your club.

Fencing equipment

Each club has its own way of teaching children to fencing, and the material, in PVC, must be adapted to the height and weight of the toddlers. They must wear a fencing jacket and a mask, all approved by the French Fencing Federation.

Each child must have one of the following three weapons: foil, épée or saber. It is the fencing master who makes his choice. Foil is the weapon commonly taught because it is the easiest.

The complete equipment is sold on professional sites for around 900 euros, from 5 years old.

Pro tip for parents:

Do not hesitate to participate in a trial session in the nearest club. Children are able to express their desire or not to register for fencing from their first lesson.
