Ear blowing

Inflammation of the middle ear is a type of otitis media that can affect both ears. To prevent the development of this disease, as well as to prevent it, use the procedure of blowing your ears.

Blowing the auditory tube – this is the introduction of pressurized air into the middle ear into the auditory tube for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The procedure is recommended for the treatment of the consequences of chronic and acute inflammation of the middle ear, as well as after tympanoplasty. Blowing out the ears is contraindicated in the presence of acute inflammatory processes in the nose and nasopharynx due to the possibility of airborne pathogens being carried into the tympanic cavity, as well as the development of purulent, acute or otitis media.

Features of ear blowing

The procedure for blowing out the ears is carried out using the Politzer method or using a catheter. Using the Politzer method, blowing is carried out using a rubber balloon with a capacity of 300 to 500 ml, which is connected to a tube ending in an olive. The latter is inserted into one or another nostril or into both in turn, and with the fingers of the left hand both wings of the nose are pressed tightly. In this way, fixation of the olive and its necessary hermetic insertion are achieved.

After this, the patient must take a sip of water and say the words “how, how, how,” “one-two,” “geek-gook,” etc. This is necessary in order to raise the soft palate. When the patient says the last word and takes the last sip, the balloon compresses easily and not forcefully.

Ear blowing is controlled either by the patient’s sensations or by using an otoscope, which is a rubber tube that is equipped with small olives at the ends, one of which is inserted into the patient’s ear and the other into the doctor’s ear. If the blowing is successful, both the patient and the doctor feel a blowing noise, during which the patient’s feeling of ear congestion disappears and hearing is restored.

The procedure for blowing out the ears can also be done using a catheter. To carry it out, a preliminary rhinoscopy is necessary in order to determine the presence of any obstacles that cannot be circumvented to the insertion of the catheter. After this, anesthesia is administered by lubricating the bottom of the nasal cavity with a special solution. Catheters of various lengths and thicknesses are used for ventilation.

The advantage of this method is that each ear is blown separately and the blowing force is precisely regulated.

The technique of blowing the ears requires knowledge of the anatomical features of the nasopharynx and nasal cavity, as well as relevant skills. Therefore, this procedure should only be performed by an experienced otolaryngologist, in order to avoid damage to the mucous membrane and the subsequent development of emphysema as a result of performing the procedure independently.
