Cosmetology 100 years ago: the procedures that your ancestors did

More than half a century ago, our ancestors decided on such crazy procedures that you cannot even imagine.

Everyone knows that medicine and cosmetology in our understanding began to emerge a century ago. However, then the procedures were so strange and frightening that it is scary to imagine their existence and the fact that they were really popular.

Beauty in those days really demanded sacrifice, which proves that one of the popular procedures was the removal of freckles, which was done through the use of carbon dioxide. Dimples on her cheeks were also in trend, so the doctors came up with a metal device that pressed the girl into the place where the dimples should have been. It was necessary to put it on at night, and in the morning there were depressions in the right place.

The first hair gadgets began to appear in those days. Huge hair dryers occupied half of the hairdressing salon, and the hair curler, which appeared in 1930, caused an incredible sensation among the girls.

There were a lot of cosmetic devices even at that time. The girls were given electro-thermal facial procedures, which, in theory, were supposed to smooth out wrinkles and help in the production of collagen.

Massage machines were also gaining popularity in those days. This even existed for the neck, in order to slightly tighten it. To combat cellulite, there was also a separate device – metal springy circles were put on the legs and vibrated, thereby providing smoothing of the skin in the necessary places. However, after such a procedure, many girls, apparently, walked with terrible bruises on their legs.

To make the skin of the face and body radiant, even and two tones lighter, women did not just use face cream, but went to the procedures to “cosmetologists”. The most popular in the 1922s was mud care using mud extracted from volcanic wells in the Carpathians.

Max Factor at the beginning of the last century was a very famous make-up artist who changed the concept of makeup. He created water-resistant textures that took hours of shooting. He also created an apparatus called the Beauty Calibrator. It was put on the head and with its help the proportions of the face and their relation to the standards were measured. The data obtained helped to eliminate the flaws given by nature with the help of makeup.

There were a lot of oddities in medicine as well. They used morphine as best they could. For example, when babies had teeth cutting and they were in pain, some careless mothers went with the child to the dentist, who cut the gums to give new teeth a way to emerge. After that, the mothers gave the children morphine syrup, which relieved the pain in the gums.

To relieve migraine headaches, doctors advised taking a hydroelectric bath – a bath of warm water and a small current flowing through the water.
