Mokhovik chestnut (lat. Rusty mushroom) is an edible fungus of the third category of the Boletaceae family. The name is given to the fungus because of its frequent growth in moss. The mushroom family of mossiness mushrooms is not distinguished by high nutritional qualities.

Chestnut flywheel grows everywhere, is common. Prefers mixed forests, grows in conifers. Loves acidic soils. Most often grows in large groups. Mycorrhiza former (usually with birch, spruce, less often with beech and bearberry).

Often the fungus grows in colonies in forests of various mixed types, as well as along embankments and forest paths. It occurs mainly in summer and autumn. In wet weather, it acquires a whitish moldy coating that infects other nearby mushrooms.

The fruiting body is a pronounced stem and cap.

Hats in young mushrooms they have a hemispherical shape, then they become more vague, prostrate. Dimensions – up to 8-10 centimeters. Color varies from yellow, light brown to olive. In rainy weather, the hat can be dark brown, with a white coating often forming on it. If other mushrooms grow nearby, plaque from the moss fly can also pass to them. In mature mushrooms, the velvety skin is covered with light cracks. The fungal tubular layer has rather large pores. The light flesh does not change its color when exposed; as the fungus grows, it becomes soft.

Pulp the fungus is very juicy, while on the cut it does not change its color, remaining whitish-cream. In young mossiness mushrooms, the flesh is hard, hard, in mature ones it is soft, a bit like a sponge.

Leg mushroom has the shape of a cylinder, reaches a height of about 8-10 centimeters. In some specimens, it can be quite strongly curved. The color is olive, yellowish, below – with a pink or slightly brown tint. The spore powder that appears during active fruiting has a pale brown color.

Mokhovik chestnut grows in summer and autumn, the season is from late June to late October.

According to edibility, it belongs to category 3.
