Mood Boosting Products

1. Dark chocolate If you feel a surge of joy every time you hit a bar of dark chocolate, don’t think it’s an accident. Dark chocolate triggers a chemical reaction in the body called anandamide: the brain releases an endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and depression. The word “anandamide” comes from the Sanskrit word “ananda” – bliss. In addition, dark chocolate contains other substances that prolong the “feel good” caused by anandamide. Scientists have even called dark chocolate “the new anxiety remedy.”   

A study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that people who consumed an antioxidant-rich chocolate drink (equivalent to 42 grams of dark chocolate) daily felt much calmer than those who did not.  

2. Protein rich foods

Foods high in quality protein, such as Gouda cheese and almonds, stabilize blood sugar levels, which makes us feel energized and in a good mood.

3. Bananas

Bananas contain dopamine, a mood-boosting natural substance, and are a good source of B vitamins (including vitamin B6), which calm the nervous system, and magnesium. Magnesium is another “positive” element. However, if your body is resistant to insulin or leptin, bananas are not for you.  

4. Coffee

Coffee affects a number of neurotransmitters that are responsible for mood, so drinking a cup of coffee in the morning can quickly cheer us up. Studies have shown that coffee triggers a response in the brain that activates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF): new neurons appear from brain stem cells, and this improves brain function. Interestingly, studies also show that low levels of BDNF can cause depression, and activation of neurogenesis processes has an antidepressant effect!

5. Turmeric (curcumin)

Curcumin, the pigment that gives turmeric its yellow-orange color, has many healing properties and is considered a natural antidepressant.

6. Purple berries

Anthocyanins are pigments that give berries such as blueberries and blackberries a deep purple color. These antioxidants help the brain produce dopamine, a chemical responsible for coordination, memory, and mood.
