Chairs without legs and a crane instead of an elevator: home ideas we must learn from Koreans
The arrangement of houses and apartments in South Korea is significantly different from what we see in Russia. In our selection, we will tell you about the details that are needed in almost every home that claims to be comfortable.
Apartment buildings in Korea last 30–35 years. Then the authorities demolish them and erect new ones in this place. People do not get used to their place of residence very much and are almost always ready to move. Maybe because each apartment has approximately the same equipment?
Additional frosted glasses
There are no curtains in the apartments of Koreans. For protection from the sun and furniture fading, additional frosted glass or dark interior shutters are placed on the frames. If you close them, the room will be much darker. Plus, since South Korean homes are too close together, the extra frosted glass prevents nosy neighbors from invading your privacy.
Removable shower faucet
Most often, in Russian realities, we can see monolithic mixers both in the kitchen and in the bathroom. For Koreans, everything looks much more practical. They have a removable tap in the kitchen, which has two modes of operation at once – a jet and a shower. It is easily transformed and can wash even the remote corners of the sink.
Convenient switches
Almost everyone has come across a situation where he could not remember whether he turned off the iron in the apartment. Koreans do not face such a problem. They do not flip every switch and device before leaving the apartment. They have a single switch that is responsible for the power supply in the house. Turning it off before leaving, you can be sure that everything is de-energized.
Delivery cells
Koreans do not worry that they will not be able to return home in time if the courier has to deliver something to them. For this purpose, special cells are installed in apartment buildings (similar to our checkpoint terminals). It is not worth worrying about the fact that the goods will be stolen, since the cells are encoded. In some houses, instead of checkpoints, there are separate rooms for tenants’ parcels.
Bracket dryers
In Russia, people dry their washed clothes on clotheslines or on folding dryers. It’s not like that in Korea. Most often, they have a washing machine in a separate small room (similar to our closet), and a bracket dryer is located nearby. It is adjusted using a special lever. You can hang the laundry on a hanger and raise it higher. When everything is dry, lower it in the same way.
Covers for air conditioners
If in Russia the presence of an air conditioner at home does not spoil the interior in any way, then Koreans perceive it differently. They try to hide this object in any convenient way or turn it into an elegant piece of furniture in the apartment. For this, special covers are bought in Korea – of different types and colors. Most often they are tissue. The cover also protects the air conditioner well from dust.
Fire-fighting room
Many Korean apartments have a special corner, which is made of fireproof materials and equipped with a hermetically sealed door. Inside there is everything you need to save yourself and your home from fire: a fire extinguisher, a flashlight, an oxygen mask. There is a special bracket in the corner, but most often enterprising Koreans dry garlic there.
Built-in furniture
Koreans always strive to make the best use of living space and not to clutter it up with things. To do this, they use built-in furniture. So, in an ordinary-looking closet, an ironing board, a compartment for storing household appliances and much more can be hidden. In the kitchen, almost every housewife has a built-in container for storing cereals. It is equipped with a dispenser and can measure the required amount of rice or buckwheat.
Chairs without legs
Koreans are used to sleeping on low beds. They also prefer chairs and armchairs that have no legs. All this is a tribute to traditions. In Korea, very often everything happens on the floor: games, rest, work. Even foreigners who come to this country find such furniture comfortable, since their legs do not feel numb.
Crane instead of freight elevator
Koreans move very often. However, they rarely carry furniture and household appliances with them, since most often they already have this in the rented premises. However, if they decide to make a global move, a crane will come to the resident’s aid, which will deliver all the furniture and appliances through the window. It is difficult to imagine how they drag the sofa into the apartment at the same time, but this is a completely different story.
