Can we still eat meat?

Meat, a health asset

Meat brings good quality protein, important for growth, immunity, the constitution of bones and muscles … It is also the almost exclusive source of vitamin B12, essential for cells and, in general, for the body. It is the best source of iron, especially red meat (beef, mutton, etc.), necessary for the transport of oxygen by red blood cells. For Prof. Philippe Legrand *, no reason to cut out meat of its diet and even less that of children, under penalty of promoting the risk of anemia. But it is not desirable for all that to consume too much! According to a recent WHO report, a overconsumption of red meat increases the risk of colorectal cancer. A conclusion to be qualified because, according to other studies, this risk disappears if we consume antioxidants and fibers (fruits and vegetables), as well as dairy products. The right frequency? Brigitte Coudray, dietician nutritionist at Le Cerin ** advises “Eat meat three or four times a week and vary between poultry, veal, pork, beef… without exceeding once or twice for red meat. “

Choose it well

> Favor “1st choice” songs : they have a more pleasant texture and a better taste compared to “1st price” pieces. But the levels of protein, iron, vitamins… are identical.

>Give preference to meats whose animals are fed in a balanced way (grass, flax seeds, etc.) such as those labeled “Bleu Blanc Cœur”, some labeled “AB” or “Label rouge”, because they certainly provide more omega 3s and antioxidants.

> Lasagna, bolognese sauce … check the percentage of meat. Usually there is little, so it does not count as a serving of meat.

>Deli meats, limit to once a week. And for children, no artisanal meats before 3 years old to prevent the risks of listeriosis. Good reflex, remove the rind from the ham.

> At each age, the right quantities : at 6 months, 2 tbsp. level teaspoons of meat (10 g), at 8-12 months, 4 tbsp. level teaspoons (20 g), at 1-2 years, 6 tbsp. level coffee (30 g), at 2-3 years, 40 g, at 4-5 years, 50 g.

Moms testify

>>Emilie, mother of Lylou, 2 years old: “We love meat! ”

“We eat it 5-6 times a week. I do for Lylou: ground beef and broccoli steak, or ground veal and salsify, or veal liver and cauliflower. She eats the meat first, then the vegetables! “

>>Sophie, mother of Wendy, 2 years old: “I only buy meat from France. “

I prefer meat of French origin, that reassures me. And to add flavor, I cook it with thyme, garlic… My daughter appreciates and loves eating chicken thighs with her fingers. “
