Baking soda has been talked about a lot lately, both on beauty blogs and on cooking sites. Bicarbonate is natural and ultra-versatile, it is widely used in dental care, especially to obtain white teeth. Here are our tips on how to properly brush your teeth with baking soda.

What is baking soda?

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is an ecological and natural substance, present in many elements: in the human body, in the oceans, etc. Nothing to do with caustic soda or sodium carbonate, which are very dangerous chemical components: their common point stops at the name.

Bicarbonate is a natural and ecological active ingredient, but also very powerful. It can replace cleaning and purifying agents in many products, which is why its uses are very varied: in shampoo, in deodorant, in toothpaste to whiten teeth, in household cleaning, to absorb and retain odors, etc.

Baking soda is a soluble white powder, odorless, and very easy to use. It is a completely biodegradable substance, which is neither harmful for health nor for the environment: it is therefore a very good natural trick to have white and healthy teeth.

Why brush your teeth with baking soda?

Baking soda is used in many beauty recipes, but it is particularly famous for its action on the teeth. Sodium bicarbonate helps cleanse the mouth and obtain a deep cleansing: it dissolves food residues, reduces the formation of tartar and rebalances the pH of the mouth.

Baking soda is therefore ideal for cleaning the mouth and in particular to fight against canker sores and other oral infections. Thanks to its cleansing properties, bicarbonate also helps prevent bad breath problems.

Sodium bicarbonate is also known because it makes it possible to obtain white teeth: its abrasive formula makes it possible to smooth the surface of the teeth and to come to beautiful yellow colorations caused by the food or the tobacco. It gives teeth a real boost in no time.

Using baking soda properly for white teeth

There are several ways to use baking soda on your teeth. You can add a little powder on your toothpaste, and do a classic brushing. To be more effective, you can brush your teeth with your usual toothpaste, and then brush your teeth with baking soda. To do so, mix baking soda and a little water to obtain a paste, then brush your teeth with it. You can also apply the baking soda paste to your teeth, then leave on for 5 minutes for an express whitening treatment.

Be careful, since bicarbonate is an abrasive product, do this only once or twice a week. Used too regularly, bicarbonate can damage tooth enamel and make them much more sensitive. It is therefore necessary to use baking soda with the greatest care, because once the enamel is damaged, the damage is irreversible. Bicarbonate, used too often, can also irritate the gums. Also, if you have sensitive teeth and gums, it is best to avoid washing your teeth with baking soda.
