Brexit will lead to another drug crisis?

The UK’s exit from the European Union will affect the pharmaceutical industry. Another drug crisis in Poland hangs in the balance. It all depends on a cooperation agreement to be concluded by the end of the year.

Everything will be settled in the transition period

Brexit has become a fact, but there is a transitional period until the end of this year, during which the British will still be bound by EU regulations. Negotiations for a cooperation agreement are expected to start this month. In uncertainty, there are, among others, drug manufacturers. If an agreement is not reached between the UK and the Member States, Poland may experience another drug crisis. All by predicted problems of producers with the extension of reimbursement decisions.

Brexit may affect the availability of drugs in Poland

Hard Brexit may affect the availability of drugs in our country, because – as Rzeczpospolita writes – The United Kingdom is a manufacturer or responsible entity for 350 to 500 drugs reimbursed by the National Health Fund in Poland. If no agreement is reached, we will return to the complicated, time-consuming and costly procedures related to the import of medicinal products. If the contracts are not renewed, the previously obtained marketing authorizations for the drugs will become invalid. Producers will have to re-register their products and it may take several years to obtain the necessary approvals.

If the conditions for leaving the community turn out to be unfavorable or are not worked out on time, Brexit will affect the availability of drugs not only in Poland, but also in other European countries where the products of local producers are reimbursed.

– The effects of Brexit will be visible both for all European countries and for Great Britain itself. We will be able to assess its effects only after we know the shape and its conditions. The health ministry has the tools to counteract its negative effects on the drug market. The key factor, however, will be the reaction time – said Marek Tomków, vice-president of the Supreme Pharmaceutical Council in an interview with Rzeczpospolita.

The editorial board recommends:

  1. Can painkillers and cold remedies be combined?
  2. Drug interactions – what should I be aware of when taking medication?
  3. Returning drugs to the pharmacy? We check what the regulations say
