Take care of her breast cancer in 24 hours and then move on, the dream of all sick women. A dream that has just come true at the Antoine Lacassagne Center in Nice, where two breast cancer patients were able to benefit from this revolutionary treatment.
A clinical study controlled by the Haute Autorité de santé
Ce new treatment of breast cancer is for women over 60s having a small tumor et without lymph node involvement.
After the tumor has been removed in the operating room, the patient benefits from a radiotherapy session lasting one minute. She can go home that evening. Then she just needs to be monitored regularly.
This treatment is possible thanks to a new radiotherapy machine called Papillon +. It was developed by a British start-up, and the principal investigators are Prof. Jean-Michel Hannoun-Levi and Prof. Emmanuel Barranger.
40 patients are expected to participate in this study controlled by the Haute Autorité de santé. To be validated, it is necessary that, thanks to this treatment, there is less than 4% local relapses in treated women, and that 95% of them are satisfied. Then, it is possible that this revolutionary treatment will be extended to a larger population of women suffering from a breast cancer.
Treating this very serious illness in just one day provides a real psychological benefit to patients: this allows them not to “ruminate” on their disease for weeks and months as with conventional, heavier treatments.
