Bilirubin in pregnant women in the blood is increased, the norm

Bilirubin is formed during the breakdown of red blood cells, causing the yellow-green pigment of bile. As a rule, bearing a fetus does not affect its level in the body. That is, the bilirubin in pregnant women should not change. But there are other cases, which will be discussed later.

In a healthy person, 3,4-22,2 μmol / L of bilirubin is observed in plasma. During pregnancy, this indicator should also be within normal limits.

Bilirubin levels in pregnant women should not change

If, before conceiving a child, a woman ate properly, played sports and did not drink alcohol, then a slight increase in pigment is not dangerous for her body or for the fetus. If the patient took a large amount of drugs, often drank alcoholic beverages, this could lead to serious liver pathologies. In this case, even a slight change in the level of bilirubin should alert the attending physician. This condition can cause jaundice, which often leads to an involuntary termination of pregnancy.

During the tests, the woman should remain calm. Stress is dangerous during pregnancy, as it can lead to miscarriage or fetal development problems

With significant deviations in the level of bilirubin, it is urgent to determine the cause that provoked this condition. After that, the doctor must prescribe qualified treatment.

Why is bilirubin elevated?

As a rule, an increase in bilirubin occurs as a result of various liver pathologies. As a result, a woman may develop jaundice, the main symptom of which is dark urine. In addition, a change in its level can be caused by other factors:

  • Violation of the outflow of bile. In this case, it does not go into the stomach, but into the bloodstream. This pathology can lead to hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer.
  • Disruption of the processing of indirect bilirubin. It does not dissolve in water, therefore, even with a significant increase in it, urine will be normal, and no abnormalities will be detected during its analysis.
  • Damage to liver cells. This pathology can be caused by organ trauma, cirrhosis, hepatitis. In this case, there is an increase in the pigment in the urine.

If a woman feels pain in the liver area, and her urine has changed color, an urgent need to see a doctor. Liver diseases are very dangerous and can lead to the death of a child and even a woman.

Usually, the level of bilirubin does not change during pregnancy. Minor deviations can be caused by stressful conditions. But if its level is too high, it is imperative to determine the cause of this and begin treatment.
